anyone know of a good site for books ?

    Try here:

    http://www.bookdepository.co.uk

The website is a bit of a mess but it has free delivery and quite a good selection IMO!

    Dear xxx

    Thank you for your email.

Following a recent update to our website we can advise that customers outside of the UK now need to purchase in Euros.

To purchase in Euros you will need to click on the euro flag below your shopping basket.

We continue to endeavour to keep play.com as competitive as ever and we will be reviewing the Euros pricing on the site.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any confusion this change may have caused.

Seems like they don't care at all about the Irish market. :(

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I intend to cease buying from Play.com due to your failure to ship sterling orders outside of the UK - and your strange and questionable conversion policy, which in essence seems to amount to covert and unfair overcharging.

I also intend to advise all interested parties that there seems to be a discrepancy between Play.com's Euro/Sterling conversion rate and that used by the rest of the World.

Further to this I intend to advise as many people as possible on Internet forums, in the media, and personally through word of mouth of more honest and honourable competitors to Play.com - such as CDWOW and SENDIT.

My custom will be withdrawn effective immediately - please expect to see a further drop in sales in due course once greater numbers of people become aware of this deceit.

    Regards,

Raiser (real name given in mail ;) )

I sent a similar email to Raisers and I got the following Reply

so it seems they might be having second thoughts. I still wont be buying anything from them until they sort this out.

Been a member since 2001, had 100s of orders. Literally. I average a couple of dvds a week. As an online community, we must have pumped a serious ammount of money into this site. Ive sent them an email informing them I wont be ordering from them again.

Id say they are regreting this move to be honest. Its not as if we can lie about the ammount of stuff we have ordered, they only have to check our accounts. Someone should point them towards this thread.

I just made my last order with them (Broken Sword 4) the day before they started pulling this bullsh1t. I won't be making any more unless they either reverse this decision or use real world euro rates.

61 orders since 2003 (which is approximately when i got my first credit card), nice of play to screw their loyal customers.

Ordered my last DVD off them yesterday, until they get this sorted.
As it turned out, they were the cheapest for this one even with this scam going on. That said they still slapped on over a euro in the exchange rate.
Thankfully I switched to BlahDvd a while ago for most of my buying because they work out cheaper 9/10 times for anything I want.
Between me & my BF however, we've ordered 260 cds/dvds/games & books off Play in the last few years..
God if all of us stop ordering, they'd lose thousands!

I've e-mailed them too. I'll just use Sendit.com & CDWOW from now on.

This is dreadful, with such a great service and all!
I looked back and have spent at least ST£2000 with them since 2001.
    Wrote them an email.

Hopefully they will reconsider, otherwise no more business from me.

Has it gotten better? I just checked a few prices on it now that it's settled down after the prices went crazy earlier and it seems to always work out about 20-50 cents off the price XE.com gives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭Xcom2

I sent them an email on Sunday.

    Hello there,

I have just discovered your new policy on order's outside the UK. I trust this is an oversight as you are charging 20% more on your currency conversion as any bank.

I cannot express enough how disappointed I am with this policy. You have just alienated an awful lot of customers.

I have 8 item's on pre order I trust I will be charged the correct sterling price for these.

    Waiting to here from you.

    The reply I got was,

They ignored my question about my pre order item's.

It will be interesting to see if they try to charge me a different amount as I agreed to pay.

Yeah, they've improved the rate. Mostly 20c more than the Sterling site on the products I checked which is grand imo.

why does it have to be over at all though ?

I suppose they want their price points to end with either .49c or .99c for that "professional" edge.

I'll be sending a similar email to play.com shortly and lets hope this gets sorted.

In the meantime I would suggest using the website below for finding the cheapest DVDs in Sterling.

    http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/

Here what I found for American Dad Season 1.

www.dvdpricecheck.co.uk also is good for finding bargains (if you know what you're looking for)

I also sent an email and got a similar reply. It seems though that they have pretty much fixed it up now and 20 or 50 cents is trivial, I am happy enough with this so will continue to shop from them. I'd imagine the reason they are 20 to 50 cent over the normal rate is that, unlike a bank, they can't simply adjust their prices every day in accordance with the economies' performance and so they probably reckon this rate will leave them in a fair position for a while.

For me this is fine, I usually order games and they are still by far the cheapest for them, when you factor in delivery. I'm impressed how fast they reacted once people spoke up, if only HMV etc took this route instead of trying to stop people using CDWOW etc.

Well I was looking at getting the wireless network adapter for the xbox 360 which is £54.99 on all sites I looked at. That translated at €82.49 onto most sites except for play.com where it was €87.99. It's now €82.49 on play.com, seems they're matching the conversion rates of their competitors which is all we could have asked for really.

to bad the selection on cdwow is not as good as play.com
though the waiting time seems to be the same
ive used cdwow many times all is good except like the sometimes 2 week wait
used play.com for the 1st time 2 weeks ago because i couldn't get resident evil code veronica for gamecube of cd wow
still takes as long to deliver

But do they even ship equipment like that out of the UK for you?

It was quite a while ago at this stage but I bought a playstation 2 controller off them in the past. The network adapter is very small anyway, the whole package wouldn't be much bigger than a dvd envelope. I think their policy is no electronics and games consoles. Console accessories aren't part of the electronic section so I think they're ok. I bought it anyway during their pricing mishap and it says it's been sent already. Actually I bought the play & charge kit for the xbox 360 off them about a month back so it's definitely ok.

Just had a look at the revamped play.com site - euro prices given seem to be a fair exchange rate of the sterling price eg 'My Name Is Earl' st price is £23.99 and the euro price is €35.99 (the exact xe exhange rate today is €35.42). A little bit extra but won't loose any sleep over it....

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,904 ✭✭✭parsi

Rather than using the XE rate you should use whatever rate your card company uses..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 355 ✭✭SCULLY

Before Play changed it's policy there was a big difference between the sterling price (converted into euro) and the listed euro price. The new set euro prices seem to have been reduced to reflect a fairer exchange rate.

Yes, they have actually taken account of all the complaints they got, they have the best range of cds and DVDS but are still dearer than CDwow(€11.99 for a cd is great). I'll stop my boycott of them now too!

maybe they had already planned it though?
