Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone know where the .bmp file (If there is one) is located for the startup splash screen in Windows XP Pro?

Or is it embedded into some other file or even part of the registry.

I'm just curious as to were is is located because the word "Professional" was removed since the introduction of SP2.

You can change the boot screen to any image you want (at a low resolution and reduced colour depth!)

    have a look here!

Could be a handy place to put an "if found please contact" splash screen up since I have the actual xp login password protected myself.

It requires editing the ntoskrnl.exe file. Personally, I wouldn't risk it... (again ). A friend in work thought it would be funny to have the terminator as his boot screen, his machine now BSOD's at least once a day.

Heres the one I made for my own PC:
    http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=5877&libid=32

But I had to format my machine a few weeks later. I've since stopped changing the boot screen as the risk isn't worth it.

While I hear what you & previous posters are saying regarding problems encountered after modifying the boot screen image? I find it difficult to understand why.
After all, you are only technically changing a bit map image? Why would or should that cause BSOD? (Aside from the fact it's windows we're talking about here ).

OK!, so the file name remains the same, the file location remains the same, but the overall file size of the image (Not the physical size of the image) contained within ntoskrnl.exe does change, could this be the underling factor that can cause Windows to throw a hissy fit? could it be that something in the registry or boot sequence has noticed that the overall size of ntoskrnl.exe has changed?

I know it's not quite the same, but I always edit both the text & the bit map image on the XP start button after I do a reinstall & have never experienced any trouble with that from a functional point of view. The only bit of grief I ever had was this, if you apply Microsoft's Update for windows XP (kb938828) after you have revamped your start button, it will revert it back to its original state. (So I just apply the update prior to changing it :D )

i wish i knew! :) then again, my desktop just seems to have a personal vendetta against me, so i'm never surprised by a BSOD. but getting them just to have a diff graphic on boot up to me wasn't worth it, so gave up on it!
