    Gardai car number in a newspaper

      allowed or not?Polish newspaper that comes out in Ireland 10 000 copies.

      From what I understand, your not allowed to take a picture of the gardai without their permission, so the gardai car number should not be allowed to be published in the newspaper

      You are mistaken.

      There is no legal problem with newspapers publishing photographs of this nature.

      there are very limited circumstances where a photograph cannot be used in the media.

      most of the time..... especially from the redtops - if its a gray area ....a picture will be used and deal with the consequences later. :D

      That's not true. Think about it, what's going to happen if someone sees the reg of a garda car in a newspaper?

      As far as I'm aware, you are allowed take pictures in a public place of whatever you want (I don't think we have an of the rubbish anti-terror stuff they do in the UK), so if the Guards are out and about you can snap away.

      There might be some legislation with regard to taking pics that may put a Garda in danger, but I'm not sure on that

      By all means take a photo, it is nice to be nice, in other words just blank out the number plate.

      What would happen? Even if you remember that reg. and even if it was Mondeo of under-cover officers, when you read the plate, it is already too late. Of course, if you have done something wrong or illegal.

      I love Gardai and the more we could see them in the streets, on the roads and motorways, the better. I am getting scared more and more.

      And about pictures? I would hardly take any pictures of Gardai. Maybe only for the reason that they are exposed to public enough for doing their work. Respect to all of them!

      I think a society, like Ireland, that allows photographs of the police force generally has a lot to be said for it. It provides a very essential balance and control in the system and something we should be proud of and not seek to erode in any way.

      But, there's certainly no major restriction on taking photos of Gardai or the cars (of course there can be circumstances where they are restricted). There is no restriction on printing the license of a marked Garda car.

      Nope, it's all the time. Lights/sirens are only to get the attention of the public to move aside.

      Mostly its a judgement call by the publication. Some will blur out the plates, other will just leave it. Unless its the Emergency Response Unit or undercover officers there should be no problem.
      Most Gardai are quite camera shy though :)

      Can you take photo's of the ERU Gardaí, not in cars but say, on foot at a checkpoint?

      There may be no law directly covering it, but when I asked about photographing gardai, the Garda Press Office replied to me saying:
      As a general rule members of specialist Garda Units are not photographed for operational reasons.

      Maybe. But there's also no point in blurring out a plate on a Garda car. The information is useless anyway.

      Yeah but it always ruins the pic. Who on gods good earth takes a perfectly good photo and then goes scribbling all over it for non artistic/asthetic purposes?

      No bother taking ERU pics, there's been a few road blocks across the northside for the last few weeks and they've been out manning them. Sure their faces are covered and as for the reg plates of the darkened out black land cruisers? No objections to being photo'd. How could they have, there is no law against it.

      Think clearly and realistically here now. What use is a Garda Reg? They know who the vehicle is registered to: the police!! Will it identify them on the street? Eh...now I ain't no criminal and even I can spot the vehicles from space!!! Nonsense notions of blacking out flipping reg's. The ERU don't sneek up on people!! They stand in front of you in a uniform, balaclava and a gun ffs.


      You'd have to be from planet goo-gooland not to know when one of those armoured beasts is breathing down your neck when driving on the road. It's far from reg plate detection those chaps are worried about.

      @ The OP. If it's a marked garda car don't worry about it. The blue lights and crest are already a dead giveaway.
