Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sadly EOB has had enough - in its current format at least.

That's a pity, I'm not regged on there but do read now and again. It'll be a great loss. :(

    Hi there Alfaguy :)

I gather boards motors forum isn't always the most popular with a lot of Octane users as we're more general than an enthusiasts forum but there's a lot of good people on Octane, many of who are regular posters here too.

It's always sad to see a popular forum go, especially for the regulars who treat it like 'home' so I think we should welcome any Octane users that join us and also look at creating new areas here to accomodate them.

This would also make our current forum more intersting and inject new life in to it with new users. :)

I can't thinking that EOB doesn't want to seen selling directly to the Canadians. Money is probably in his pocket and then in a week or two octane will be back online with new owners

If it was sold what would be the point in closing it? I'm sure the 'new owners' would prefer any takeover to run seamlessly and not have any inerruption to services or give users the opportunity to move to another forum.

Secondly, I can't see the forum being busy enough to attract foreign investment. There's a couple hundered forums on boards and tens of thousands of users and they don't make big money. ;)

Ah no, I've never posted there but I'm a total lurker there.

If the worst comes to worst maybe we'll see some new names in here at least.
To think we only have two project threads that I can think of is mad.

Autoguide do buy up forums and make a profit, and I'd guess Octane was on their radar after the recent buyout of VAGDrivers, which has roughly as many members and fewer posts.

..not saying it was sold to them, but could be.

@Marlow, suddenly that C&C at your place has become very important. I'll have to get over there tomorrow and find out what's going on.

I have no home anymore...well aside from biker.ie.

Well, the problem is, that biker.ie only covers one aspect. And the other aspect can't be discussed :( Hence, why I'm very little active over there.

Managed to get thrown in jail on day one or two, after I subscribed. Not even for saying the term, but for posting a picture, that contained the offensive material.

Well, the only one that can answer it is Eamon. There's a lot in that Hiatus thread. The question is, where we're going from here.

I have a few ideas, but we'll have to see.

The owner just said something alone the lines of "there is no reason I am closing the site but we have had a good run and might come back in the future" so no real reason given.

A once great website with some great contributers.

However, it was dominated by a few big egos and plenty of bitching and moaning. You couldn't ask a question on there without at least one sarcastic smartarse replying.

It turned into a buddys club for a few rich lads and it was time for it to go.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

If the owner wasn't arsed anymore or felt he needed a break why didn't he just pass the mantle on? Stinks of taking the ball home tbh.

    FYP

OT: I only lurked on Octane occasionally, but it seemed to be a good site. Sorry to see it go. Maybe we can accomodate the Little-Endians (read quote below before clicking link :)) here - another Motors sub-forum maybe?
The novel further describes an intra-Lilliputian quarrel over the practice of breaking eggs. Traditionally, Lilliputians broke boiled eggs on the larger end; a few generations ago, an Emperor of Lilliput, the Present Emperor's great-grandfather, had decreed that all eggs be broken on the smaller end after he cut himself breaking the egg on the larger end. The differences between Big-Endians (those who broke their eggs at the larger end) and Little-Endians had given rise to "six rebellions... wherein one Emperor lost his life, and another his crown". The Lilliputian religion says an egg should be broken on the convenient end, which is now interpreted by the Lilliputians as the smaller end.

    Not your ornery onager

Such a valuable resource and a place I found entertaining - even the bitching. Pity seeing it end like this - I don't think a hiatus is good for business on or off line no matter how temporary.

Mika Hakkinen took a 'temporary' hiatus from F1 and was never seen again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

I reckon its a big loss. Yes there are people on forums doing a bit of winding up etc, but it was a very big resource.

How many threads went up of people looking for something, or a service, even peoplefor jobs, and it was organised on Octane.

Generally, the specialist forums were brilliant also.

    Just my 2c.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭RandomAccess

I can't see boards motors appealing to those guys very much, it's just too general interest on here. I was actually thinking of signing up over there for a change as I was getting tired of some of the repetitive topics on here. Not a dig at anyone, just the way it is.

I might just look at some of the other boards.ie motoring subforums.
The other idea, and I doubt it's one that will be entertained would be to rearrange the forum so we don't have to wade through things like should I buy a diesel, what do ye think of the Audi a4, fog lights, overtaking lanes. Etc

I guess I'm looking for a hiding place away from those topics that have been done absolutely to death and I'm not the only one I think.

It seems boards motors is considered by its regulars to be a place to hang out, but by others it's a place to ask what the difference between a petrol and a diesel is. I'm just not sure this is sustainable in the long term since a lot more people are posting here now. Just a thought anyway.

Octane was a fanatics site. Boards is a popular all rounder and is generally where Joe Soap comes to ask questions. Like any Fora it has its regulars and it's problems but there's a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience here. There's nothing stopping Octane users coming here and helping to re shape an ever changing forum.

I wouldn't quite agree there. It needed a shuffle around maybe, but just shutting it down was over the top. And I found, that social standing had very little impact nor mattered on Octane.

What's the moan about, it wasn't the only motoring forum out there.
I think most people are upset about losing their post count, get over it and join another forum.

Now if you excuse me I'm going to sit in this here dark corner and quietly cry over my lost 200 posts.

You seem to worry about post count, or the date you joined or whatever. People that have that sort of thinking probably never graspted, how or what Octane really was.

Others couldn't care less. For a lot of people on Octane, there was a huge social aspect. More than any other forum.

C&Cs, trackdays, road trips. I've met a lot of new people, face to face, through Octane. Made friends. etc. That's what Octane was to me personally. And there is a lot of people on there, that feel the same.

And it was one of very few non-brand specific forums. Even pushbikes, motorbikes, a whole pile of motorsport, etc. were part of it.

I'm only a relatively new user to it and yes I'll agree there was a big social aspect to it but so do most motoring forums.
The forum itself is only a vessel or a means, it's the people that make it. Id everyone joins up to another forum what's to stop that forum becoming what octane was.

It's the disruption, that is the issue. The spirit will live on.

Also, there is loads of people, that actually don't actively post on Octane. Lurkers. But that do participate in the social aspect of things. You risk of loosing some in the process.

That's what is effectively after happening as I predicted would happen over on Octane when the last closure scare was doing the rounds. See here

    http://fortyacresofyellow.freeforums.org/

Its the membership who make it - actual people - it does not matter how snazzy the website looks or what amazing features it has. Octane has lost its membership now - many dispersed into the wider cyberspace never to be heard from again - just a crying shame it is. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

Nearly 250 members over there now. I wonder is it just a case of people joining to vent their fustration about it all. Or will it rise from the ashes into the community Octane once was.

Can we not have an Enthusiast motoring section? For Build Threads/Garage Builds etc...

Saves wading through the fog lights/diesel threads. :)
