What about renting the hall? Surely you wouldn't need to pay a membership fee to rent the hall for an hour?

The guide made a big point of saying that everyone had to be a member. And he looked at me as if I was mental when I questioned this.

On reflection (I hope!) I think either
    - they just havent thought it through or
    - theyre acting dumb to get people to sign up.

Surely clubs will get the use of the the facilities they need for free. Or am I wrong.

according to a club captain (not going to mention which), they are able to use it for their own training needs for 5euro per person per session.

I've paid well over 400 for this gym, and I'm sure many other students have paid the same or even more, and frankly the fact that I have to only get one year's membership discounted is an absolute joke.

The gym, according to the SU is open on thursday.

So kingfisher are running the sports halls and swimming pool as well? Crunch never ran the sports halls in Aras na Mac Lein did they? I always presumed it was the SU. Why should we (current students) have to pay for this we, we've already paid for the bloody thing and its dearer then crunch ever was for 9 months. The gym in NUI Maynooth is free for students, and we have to put up with this crap! Not happy with this but looking over the txt of the referendum it all seems to be in-order. In words of Kent Brockman "I'v said it once and I'll say it again, democracy simply doesn't work"

    +100!

My biggest problem is the requirement that you sign up for a full years membership. I'm moving away from Galway in about 2/3 months and I was looking forward to using the gym for that period as it's only a stones throw from my house. This requirement is also going to affect a huge amount of students who only live in Galway from September to May.

If anyone has the text of the referendum or any of the surrounding literature I'd be most obliged if you could post up a link or alternatively PM me. I can't find it on the NUIG website. Thanks.

In fairness the facilities at nuim have nothing on what the new nuig place is offering. It is sh!t that you're being asked to pay multiple times for the new gym though.

I got this email from the students union:
    Hi Meghan,

    Thanks for your email.

As for your first question, yes there will be pay as you go options. I
called over to the centre yesterday evening to ask about this, and they
seemed unsure, so I'm hoping to meet with the general manager today or
tomorrow - pay as you go rates were part of the University requirements,
so it will be resolved before next week I hope.

As for question two, unfortunately there is no agreement yet about
crunch members, this is another thing we're working on, as there are
people with memberships up to second semester and they will need to be
    either compensated or refunded.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions,
    Muireann

I was also talking to Muireann and she confirmed that the levy increase only came into effect last September, so the maximum anyone has paid so far is one year.

Seems like a lot of stuff being said about this new centre.went for tour yesterday and it is great. Know that the hall etc can be hired out without being a member cause someone on our tour enquired about it.apparently prices etc not sorted yet but it will be available for hire. And my god the hall is massive . . . . . 3 basketball courts.....
Anyway cant wait to see it with equipment in

Went in yesterday for a look. Apparently the equiptment is arriving today. I took a few pics too (just the pool, looking down on the sports hall, and an empty gym) so ill post them up later on when im home.

Looks pretty epic for NUIG though! Its gonna be something else when the open day tips around.

What’s the story with the tours, are they at certain times every day, can you just randomly turn up and be given one?

    careful now!

Might try get a look in there tomorrow or Friday, ask a few more questions, take a pic if the equipment is installed, and probably give em 250 notes too.

I was told 1500 have signed up already, and they are only taking 4000. Im guessing thats students and members of the public.

Was on the tour today and I must say I'm extremely impressed. It's top quality, it looks like no expense has been spared. Can't wait for it to open!

Sounds like marketing ploy. :P But I don't think a restriction on the amount of students able to get membership would go down too well.

  • Moderators Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

I was thinking marketing ploy myself, but what if its true! I might just get 2 and sell one off like tickets for a concert!

Gym memberships, anyone buying or selling gym memberships!

To be honest, i like the idea of a limit of people! 4000 is quite a bit. The only thing turning me off the gym was the thoughts of it being packed full like the old gym. Strange the whole 1500 signed up already, its 2 weeks before college starts so you saying theres only room for 1/6 of the college population to get a membership now? Thats assuming alot of students arnt in galway for the summer and many of the 1500 are general public.

Does anyone know can you rent out the sports hall or squash court/ hand ball court for free if your a member? Or whats the price if its not free?
One of the questions ive to find out

its actually staff mostly who have signed up so far.

The most part of 1500 would have to be more then or equal to 751 staff. I dont think theres 751 staff there!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭cheekay

well thats what the gym instructors said yesterday. Its possible seeing as there are 2000 members of staff in NUIG.

  • Moderators Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Staff from the college as a whole, ah yes. Maybe, but I think some of my lecutures or definatly past lectures enjoy some pies more then a nice run on a treadmill!
Unless the can get an image of a freshly baked pie on the TV on the treadmill, they might run after it then!

Hey guys been reading your mails wid interest new to the boards scene so bare wid me. It does seem to sound like the same marketing ploy they use in most gyms Ie "buy now or it will be all gone" I just wonder how many of the memberships are on hold for the general public ? I would also be a little concerned about the cap for student members as this was i thought meant to be a gym that was built with the students in mind! I hope that this wont turn out to be another commercial venture where the students are a second thought, seems to me that the possability of filling a gym with public paying twice what the students are paying would be a bigger draw for a commercial company. I used to attend the classes last year mainly Joanne Doyles Class it was brill does any one know what the story is with the classes in particular the abs blast, and body combat/attack are they continuing and if so whos teaching and can you still pay as you go.??? Sorry for all the questions.

    Welcome to boards.

"wid", im guessing this is supposed to be "with"!

Just a heads up, text speak is generally hated on boards, pretty sure its also not allowed.

Well i dont know if theres a cap for general public or anything but ive heard its €600 for the general public to join so that might turn a few of them off the idea.

No idea about classes etc, and from what I gathered "pay as you go" is a no no. We asked could you book courts and such if you wernt a member, he said members and members of societies can book em. Seemed to be saying that you can just use what you like for a small fee, you have to join.

He did say something about 40 or so classes (all types i guess) a week upstairs, and about 20 a week downstairs, so im sure there will be something for you.

It's definitely not true about having to be a member, the current prices for a swim is €5 for students.

And seen as there was no other "text speak" in the message above maybe "wid" was a typo? Are typos allowed?
