    Hey,

Im find Boards fairly slow today.. the page load time is very random. Sometimes it loads quick(sh) then slower, then in between. Its fairly unstable it seems and im getting a few "Database down" messages to. Earlier, I couldnt even get here - just got a blank page. Is it just me?

Yeah I got that earlier too.
Site is crawling along at the moment, but then I don't use boards much when it's slow... it feels like I'm kicking the server while it's down :)

    Nope.

Haven't gotten the database errors, but I think boardsie did fall down for a short while earlier.

Boards and Bebo - my two favourite sites - are wonderful. But why are they both so blooming slow and unpredictable? Am I cursed? Are we all cursed?!!

Its been quite variable today alright. I know we've been saying this for a long time but really, hang in there... servers are in our hands and on their way to to config/production. This will be a complete restructure, rebuild of the infrastructure going from 2 front servers and a single DB to something more along the lines of 7 front servers and a pair of clustered DB servers. Lets just say we hope you will see/feel where your subscriber yoyo's go to. ETA 1-2 weeks in my amateur opinion.

Btw, out of curioisty - why are you guys using vBulletin and not Invision Power Board? Just curious.

Pretty sure Invision Power Board didn't exist when boards moved from UBB to VBB.

does this mean that when i click on new posts i will getthe last 20 posts that were posted instead of me having to go through every forum individually to see new posts
when i first joined boards you got all the new posts by clicking new posts but when i do it now they come up an hour behind???

Bad for this time of night. That's the worst but every thread is hovering around 26 seconds.

There is nothing more annoying than spending 20 mins to craft a reply (or original post) to find you have timed-out. You back-button - you have "nothing!".

Think this is a jelsoft issue though - can't think why you couldn't have these in an independent session that can query the live database where the original post has moved to.

Ps. Please don't delete this as I might need a nixer there.

PPs. If they already have this feature and you haven't enabled it - you cannot delete this post - it may be evidence

I doubt its a jelsoft issue......

Seems to be quite slow right about now, though the

"Page Generated in 0.42470 seconds with 14 queries"

...doesn't appear to suggest it. Other pages just won't stop loading. I'm using the "Reply to Thread" button for the first time since I learnt how to use quick reply.

I just turned off peer guardian and boards is rocketing along.
Are the people who are experiencing slowness using background software such as peer guardian that may be causing the problem?

When I was using it last night there was nothing running on my machine besides the operating system and firefox :/

I got 3 database errors just trying to open this page. So far, that brings the total to about 10 in the past 45 minutes. It took me 10 minutes alone to get this page open. I don't think Boards has ever been slower for me than it has been in the past week or two.

Have been having constant timeouts over the past 3 days but I think that problem is seperate to boards?

I nearly always get database errors, often when I am just trying to log in. I dont see the point, personally, in using more then one "front" server with its own copy of vB, the slowness seems to be that you have one, single, probably unoptimised, database on a seperate machine which is like tar when this site gets busy.

@Sully: IPB is a far better forum system, and it converts from vB so easily too, but it would take a lot of extra effort and work to convert boards to that system, to much so that any gains in features and performance may not offset it. For example, they would either have to change how boards is moderated (probably not a bad thing) or add that mod that grants those banning powers to forum and category moderators.

Ok, this is doing my head in, HOW can clicking back take as long as entering a damn forum? I click on a thread (takes 30secs to open), read a post or two and then click back and wait another 30 seconds!! I have never experienced that on any other site, surely the page before has just been loaded and you are just going back to the same screen? Why does it take so long?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Its actually beginning to make me angry .. and that dont happen much.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,240 ✭✭✭Endurance Man

    http://thestudentroom.co.uk/index.php

This forum which i found recently has a couple hundred more members than boards and seems very busy. It seems to be using the same vBulletin thing that boards uses and yet it flys along at a grand pace?
Another funny thing is the size of the sigs on this site, they are HUGE! and yet dont seem to affect loading times for me?
One extra bonus is clicking back! doesnt reload the whole damn page :(.

This is insane, I am using a 10MB internet access at work and a 4MB at home, I have got the feeling to be on 33k dial-up here.
    Please do something...

Looks to me more like a database perf issue because HTTP response is ok.
Maybe some database pruning then defrag might help ?
