PIMP MY SOCIETY 09/10

Hey, I know it may be a bit early but better early than never I always say!

Anyway, this thread is for UCC boardsies who are affiliated with societies to tell us why they're so much better than all the others. It's also a good place to ask any questions you might have about societies, since all the people who know about societies will be here already.

I know September seems like ages away but I feel it would be good if people coming into college next year have an idea about what socieities would suit them before the Societies Day.

    Anyway, better start pimping....

I'm Chair of the Labour Youth society here in UCC. We are a democratic socialist organisation dedicated to the ideas of fairness, equality, and universality. We run many campaigns including calling for the introduction of gay marriage, opposition to the reintroduction of third level fees, the Killer Coke campaign, opposed to war in every form, plus many more similar campaigns.

We are one of the smaller political societies on campus (something I'm dedicated to reversing next year!) but this also has advantages as you make friends very easily, and there's not many squabbles! In my personal experience, I have made friends that I wouldn't have if i hadn't joined, and I have developed skills like public speaking etc that I was never good at before, but now i can make a good stab at it! Also, it lets you make a difference, as Labour Youth have a seat on the national party's Central Council so you can make proposals that influence things nationally.

And of course, there is great craic to be had as well! We have a social after every weekly meeting, and are hoping to run events next year like gigs, quizzes etc to raise funds for charities in the locality (this is something I'm very passionate about - giving back to the less advantaged). Also, there are many Labour Youth conventions, where we meet up with others throughout the country and these are tremendous fun! There's also a summer school every summer (in Galway this year) in early July, and it promises to be very informative (as well as a great piss up!)

I've probably forgotten a lotta things (I'm new to this Chair malarky!) so if you want to find out more check our bebo www.bebo.com/LYUCC, PM me, or I'll see you on Socieities Day in September! :)

Duly reported. If you have nothing helpful to add then just don't.

This thread is about letting people who are coming into college know about all the different socieities from an insider student's point of view. I'm sure everyone will agree that's a fairly valuable service and has been very successful in the UCD forum.

So from now on can we please just have people talk about their societies and can a mod please sticky this?

    All the best,
    Cheese

Hookers and blow, that's what more.
Kick-boxing is pretty cool as a sport, and the people are sound out. Join that.

PhySoc - Join us. We have cookies.
I'm the social secretary for the society next year (provided I survive repeating my disastrous summer exams and actually make it to 3rd year). If you have even the slightest interest in physics or astronomy, you should definitely come. And if not, shur come anyway. (Did I mention we have cookies?)

As soon as our committee has met and I have more details as to what dastardly plans we have in store for the unsuspecting public of UCC I'll make sure to post here again. :)

Cant take a joke society, scratch that one off the list.

"Eamon Gilmore , always in Labour never delivers"

    You'd better report me quick

Well I'm auditor of the atheist soc; if you're interested in discussing secular philosophy and campaigning for secular politics then do come along to our meetings. We're making arrangements for the start of next year. I'll post 'em when finalised.

I'm actually splitting my sides here... Has anyone ever mentioned how witty you are?? Love the way you somehow bring in Eamon Gilmore, the most popular leader in the country. How do you expect him to 'deliver' when we're in opposition like seriously?!

Anyway... do you have anything to say about a society or are you just gonna diss them?

I like the idea of getting involved with a political party but there isn't one that I can fully support. Ogra FF are too conservative. Ogra SF have been involved in too many dodgy incidents. YFG I wouldn't even contemplate joining.
I would agree with a lot of Labour issues but the Killer Coke thing is something I've never got. I'm pretty much addicted to the stuff and, being the incredibly selfish person that I am, I'm not willing to boycott it for Colombian union leaders. Oh and the fees issue is something I'm neutral on.

Back on topic, this thread was a great idea. Once again, I remind you all that PhySoc comes with cookies.

Eh, Gilmore has never actually led Labour into a general election so that statement doesn't mean anything.

Also his popularity and approval ratings are far higher than those of Cowen or Kenny.

Lets evaluate the current party leaders:

FF Brian Cowen - no comment required
FG Enda Kenny - the carisma of white paint, would lose an elction to Hitler
SF Gerry Adams- do all terrorists have beards?
    PD's - RIP
    Libertas Declan Ganley- arms dealer

Attila The Hun was more popular then that lot.

But your still saying Gilmore is more popular than them, right?

It's stereotypical I know but I have to ask, what's the male to female ratio? :p I'd probably join whatever it is but I want prior warning. :pac:

It's roughly a fifty fifty split. Although my figures could be off slightly. I'm not good with statistics.

UCC Young Fine Gael will be the place to be next year. UCC are one of the most respected YFG branches, and among our members are our Vice-President and Munster Regional Organiser. We have weekly meetings, good for public speaking skillz. and attend all the YFG piss-ups/events around the country, so not only do you get to meet people in UCC, but you'll soon get to know people from other branches too. We have a good relationship with all our local reps e.g. Laura McGonigle, John Buttimer, Simon coveney, Deidre Clune and were highly involved in the recent historic elections.

Events being planned for next year include weekly debates, speakers, a trip to Stormount, a Lisbon Campaign, a general "raise awareness about politics" campaign, and of course many mad nights on the town. See you all on Socs Day!!

I'll be a first year student next year and i was thinking of actually starting a society as such, cos i wanted to join some political society but really can't find one that fits....FG-too much populism, Labour- actually managed to beat FG in populism, and is socialist(enough said), FF- ya right...., SF-they sit with communist in the European parliament, i mean come on...

So like three months ago i was thinking of trying to set up a society in ucc when i'll eventually become the student there, with my friends we kinda started this youth organization aimed at European issue, like integrating other EU citizens in their countries and getting young people more interested in European issues, but now i'm thinking of maybe starting up something of a more capitalist-thinking-dominated society that would still concentrate on the EU issues but would also try to show to the politicians the disagreement of young people with the Welfare State that we had here during the boom when everyone kinda lost any care in the word thanks to so many financial bonuses provided by the state...or something along those lines, still working on the project...

i suppose just wanted to ask if anyone would be interested? cos i think i need like 100 people interested for a new society

You only need 4, if it was more there wouldn't be a SF or Labour society.

There is a fairly intensive vetting process for new societies. It has to be something completely different, it has to contribute to college life, where do you see it in five years time etc. What you're talking about sounds like it would be covered by FF/FG/Polsoc.

Sure join YFG and see if you can change us from the inside!!:p

Texts and emails maybe- if you wanted you could just give your email address when signing up. Obliged, ha, no way! Most people will sign up to a million and one things for the free stuff. Sign up for a lot, try them all ( especially YFG :p), see what sticks!!
