    Hello Everyone,

    I'm starting science in Trinity in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has any helpful advice for surviving the transition from school to college?
    Any and all tips are appreciated :)

    Learn how to use a ****ing condom. Don't carry them around in your wallet/hand bag. Don't put them on inside out. Don't wait for it to go purple before you get in checked out.

    A part from that, there is no advice, you'll find your own way and as problem crop up which are unique to you, ask for help here or elsewhere.

    Above all don't be a muppet towards the old men like me.

    Ah there's not much to know really, it can only be easier to go into college. Especially if you haven't moved away from family or anything like that.

    The Phil and the Hist are two you'd be mad not to join really. Loads of good stuff there. Debates and then free food and beer afterwards. The hist fits nicely into any stereotypes of trinity you'd like to see, with its tradition and all that.

    Apart from that it's a matter of preference.

    In my experience, you make more friends through clubs and socs then you do through your course.

    I'm in BESS though, which has less hours than science, so it might be different.

    OP: Join a ****load of societies and clubs, try a bit of everything and see what sticks. I got press-ganged into joining Ultimate Frisbee, never expecting to go to more than one training session to see what it was like, and ended up loving it - I've made some brilliant friends through it, from something I'd never have thought of trying if left on my own. It might leave you a little cash-light at the end of Freshers' Week, but any society worth its salt will have at least a couple of receptions and nights out during the year where you'll more than make it back. Plus, if you find one thing that sticks, and one group of people that you spend the next 4 years having fun with, it's totally worth it.

    Oh, and talk to everyone. There's no better time to meet new people than the first couple of weeks of college.

    In college libraries are for studying in, not like when people are studying for the LC and go to them to frigging socialise in while they happen to have books open in front of them. If you're in the library, stay quiet or you will be beaten with a rubber hose.

    Speaking of rubber hoses, keep in mind what Boston said about learning to use a condom, seriously.

    Apart from that join a few societies and meet a few people with similar interests (people in your course don't count, and most of them won't give a shit about the course anyway) and you should be alright

    Did anyone ever see your man that wandered around the hamilton library last year.
    He was a bit of a biker.
    Long, dark, curlyish hair.
    Always carried a helmet with him.
    Leather jacket and leather trousers.
    There would always be a squelching sound as he walked passed.
    I could only imagine the levels of chafing that occured.

    Makes sense for science students, but one piece of advice I'd give my first year self would be to skip more Sociology lectures and classes and spend them doing more entertaining stuff. First year of college is the only year you can really afford to **** about and not give too much of a crap about academics - it's worth taking advantage of that.

    As my name references I'm also a Hamilton boy! Seriously, don't take notice of some people's misguided opinions of the Phil and Hist, most have rarely attended one of our events, it seems to be the cool, leftest thing to do to attack the two biggest and most sucessful societies, who provide so much for the student body, eg snooker rooms, open conversation room with table football and tv, computer facilities, other societies have use of our rooms, not to mention the amount of guests brought in, which improves the image of college as a whole.
    Everyone has different interests and there are many societies too cater for this, but dont automatically write off the Phil and Hist when you might actually have an interest.
    Food and drink soc organise quality events, their Xmass party in particular, ultimate frisbee is woth checking out as its great to meet new people.

    PS, that biker guy can be seen liberating tobacco from spent cigarette butts before packing it into his pipe, if you offer him a cigarette he wont take it, or maybe he dosen't like marlboro?:confused:

You and you ilk are a cancerous parasite in this university, monopolising student funding and life for far too long. You make a profit from providing snooker tables (and soon pool tables) and the computer facilities have nothing to do with you bar sharing a building.

    Monopolising what exactly? By organising events people are eager to attend and providing facilities college/other socities don't? Every individual who joins the society gets something from it, be they regular attendees, hanging out in the building at lunch times/freshers week and partaking in the entertainment provided, or just coming along to see high profile guests during the year. Another sad example of the rampant culture of begrudery in this country

    How exactly does the college serve any society? Each society recieves funding from the csc and then raises funds through their own events/sponsership.
