Damn just bought a WD 500 gig portable drive for about 70 euro. Can't really justify buying another drive a couple of days later..... or can I ... :D

Also in before someone post a competing 1TB drive for 50 quid but except its not usb powered (usually happens with usb portable drive BAs) :p

just be aware that this is not an IDE or SATA HDD, but seem to have a direct USB interface - can't use as internal disk at later stage.

also for anyone looking for a 500GB portable - this is the cheapest I've seen so far.

I've been after one of these for a while and its a very good price for this spec.

Anyone know if this can be formatted to FAT32 and used as an external drive on a Playstation 3?

    Thanks.

But you can remove the shell and there will be a normal sata drive inside.

This is not the case with newer WD Passport drives, they have a PCB with a MicroUSB connection and I'm thinking this could be the same with this Samsung model.

First off is samsung a good brand for a external hard drives? I have a 500GB toshiba one that ive had for nearly 2 years now-still works well but is nearly full of data :pac:

Secondly does this samsung drive come without the leather finish-its horrible-the idea of seeing that everyday sickens me. I mean why on earth would you have leather of all things on pc peripherals ffs?

Wow, didn't see that before. But lo and behold: http://www.macworld.com/article/152913/2010/07/mypassport.html

Hope it doesn't become a trend.

    FAT32 volumes can be 512 MB to 8 TB. But note;
While FAT32 partitions this large work fine once created, some software won't allow creation of FAT32 partitions larger than 32 GB. This includes, notoriously, the Windows XP installation program and the Disk Management console in Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. Use FDISK from a Windows ME Emergency Boot Disk to avoid.

Sorry for the resurrection of an old thread. Just wondering if anyone who bought one of these got a hard case for it. I'm looking for one and want to be sure of the size.

Picked up this. USB 3.0 (backward compatible).

2 year warranty. Very pleased with it.

have that too. seems grand so far. usb 3.0 means will be about 2 X fast with newer laptops with usb 3.0 ports.

Tried it on a friend's laptop and was about 3/4 times faster on average which will come in handy when I upgrade the laptop in a few years! :P

Thinking on getting the Toshiba one as well.

How big is compared to WD or Samsung?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭The Ayatolla

It's VERY small! 2.5" form factor.

Has anyone actually bought the HD in the OP?

    Doesn't ship to Ireland.

That's true. However, there is a newer (and slightly cheaper) version of that model here and they do ship that one to Ireland  P&P comes to £7.50, so the order total is £78.83.

However, this Toshiba Drive, which is the same size, same capacity and has USB 3.0, is cheaper again, and qualifies for free delivery to Ireland
