    Having serious problems with ADSL.

Connection dies and only solution is to re-boot server. Once we do it works for about 10 minutes and dies.

Are on a network of pc's, 4 (and laptops on occassional basis) in office.

have checked all systems for possible conflict internally and removed likely (?) issues.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS THAT MIGHT GET US GOING PERMANENTLY?

    Some background.......................

    Have ADSL esat - 512/128.
Modem type: Ericsson 230dp provided by esat.
    Bandwidth test:32.1 kb/s
Download time for 1 MB: 4.4 minutes.

12MB file download by ftp: 24 to 26 kb/s on double download from ftp.esat.net.

    Ping:

    C:\WINDOWS>ping 217.114.166.147 (BOARDS.ie)

Pinging 217.114.166.147 with 32 bytes of data:

Try an external router insted of the ericsson modem hooked upto a machine.

Yeah an external router would be more suited to haveing multiple PCs, try the D-Link DSL 504 router which also serves as a DSL modem aswell.

Looks like a router is the way to go!

    So further assistance requested.

We have a LAN out of a 3Com 10/100 hub. The hub is connected to a pc which acts as a server with two network cards. One card is attached to the LAN and the other to the ADSL modem. The server pc is running with 'wingate professional' which acts for internet sharing, NAT, and can act as a mail server, VPN etc etc. It acts as our firewall.

    Question?

Where should the router (eg DSL-504 ADSL ) sit in the chain. What way should I connect?

    many thanks for your help.

Where are you Esat are having some fibre issues in the south west at the moment

    On target.

This hub is in Cork city and we are aware that they have some issues. They are replacing a ring circuit over these days.

We have been on ADSL for a month with these issues in existance since the connection.

We could accept fluctuating service levels but the need to re-boot server every 5/10 minutes due to a dropped service is really getting our goat!

Yup I could see how, when you need to reboot the server I take it your DSL light (the one on the far left) has started flashing and the modem is attempting to train up again?

never used a dlink 504, but it does have nat port forwarding etc, and a dhcp server so you could place it straight onto the network, and disable the second port on the pc currently doing the server work, is it a server?? (linux or nt4/2000 server) if so you might want to leave it doing dhcp and set the default gateway to the dlink router

    sirlinux

Using one pc on win98 acting as a server and set up as wingate server. Others are setup as wingate clients. everything routes through the server pc which is hooked to the adsl modem supplied by esat.

    nellieswellies

Strange. The ericsson 230dp has five lights. When we loose connection the lights all remain on. Turn the adsl modem off/on and we do not get connection. Only three lights are utilised (power (left), network(middle) and ADSL service (right), others are USB and ??).

When we are down the service level light still remains on. When we have demand it flickers as does the network one.

Could be a faulty modem .. am attempting to get replacement one from esat but no great joy there.

We bypassed the wingate and connected to another pc direct but same happened and similar results to those provided earlier.

dump the server, get a Dlink DSL 504, although you might want to get a Dlink Firewall iswell

that seems alot like a software issue....

try reinstalling windows on the router machine, or even replacing it with linux (there are several variants of linux designed specifically to act as routers, and i'd trust linux over windows any day for this sort of thing).

(thats if you don't want to buy the DLINK thingamajig)

Just a quick update & thanks for assistance.

    Current situation/Fixes:

ESAT ADSL having some problems in Cork area currently being worked on. May benefit from this when resolved.

Current bandwidth experience for 512/256 ADSL is 96 kilobits per second with a download time of 1.8 minutes for 1MB. This is rated as POOR. for this connection type.

Maintaining Ping -t <ip> open at all times to ensure no dropped system and it works mostly. System does still die (time out), however.

Removed redundant TCP/IP settings. Removed ISDN card. Rebuilt WinGate server profiles and firewall settings. Established all bindings again.

THE GREAT NEWS: we are not booting every five to ten minutes.

APPRECIATION: Thanks to nellieswellies for PM advise.

HOPE: We will one day be on ADSL.

WHILE WAITING: We can get 45.5 connection on a standard 56k dial-up account with no hitches. Running side by side ADSL (PC) and 56K (laptop) the 56k beats ADSL hands down.:confused:
