It being Bloomsday and all, I attended the opening of the James Joyce Bridge at Blackhall Place. The bridge is at 15 Ushers Quay, the house in "The Dead".

The current bets are as to whether the local "youth" will try to climb the arch and either go splat on the footpoth or climb on the railing and fall though the 'gap' into the river.

The bridge carries traffic from the Navan Road and Finglas onto the South Quays. The N2 is one of the last remaining thoroughfares that has no bridge across the Liffey. Its imperative to both the Dublin Development Plan and the DTI.

how can a car driver take advantage of the new bridge?

coming from the south-west of the city it's obvious enough : instead of coming all the way down to christchurch to cross over, one can cut down off thomas street to oliver bond, straight over the bridge, up through smithfield, and over to drumcondra/phibsboro that way.

But from the northside - coming down stoneybatter, that piece of the road between benburb street and the bridge is still bus only.
Is that an oversight? And even if you cross the bridge from N to S, you then have to turn right towards Heuston anyway. Is it supposed to take the load off the North Circular road?

From the South Quays to Stoneybatter / Cabra (Church Street tends to turn into a bun-fight), it would be quicker (only busses can turn right at Rory O'Moore Bridge), primarily for busses heading towards Blanchardstown.

I'm not sure, but they might revise the one-way system in the area to improve things up, in particular with Luas coming on-stream next year and redevelopment work areound Smithfield.

Part of the reasoning behind the bridge is to provide a focal point for the HARP project.
