Most long conferences go on for a week. Comreg have found one that takes 4 weeks. Great sez Comreg , we'll have some of that.

They made sure nobody asked them about Chorus licences and things and stuff by Announcing they were away for 4 weeks.......Here On Their Website . Whos left to deal with the High Court case against Eircom next week?

Perhaps it also explains the early publication of the Apr-June 2003 ComReg Quarterly Report?

One wonders what the cut-off date was for the rather unimpressive (but not unexpected given the pricing and dysfunctional marketing) DSL figures in this report?

If these people were in the accounting business, we'd be seeing annual reports for the y/e 31 Dec in mid Nov? ;)

I see once again, they have included ISDN in their broadband figures in the commentary section of the report. Well done ComReg.

In 2003 the key issues under discussion include:
    ...
    Achieving global frequency allocations for Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) systems in frequency bands around 5 GHz that are becoming popular in Europe and which are already being used to provide broadband access in Ireland;

    Around 5.4Ghz (ISTR)

Europe has a standard called Hiperlan
    The US has 802.11g

    They overlap but not perfectly.

Essentially Hiperlan should be put to bed in favour of 802.11g

The 5.8Ghz band is another that does not overlap. In the US it is also known as the U-NII band.

While 802.11g will not be licenced, the power output allowed in the 5.8Ghz band is betwen 6 and 20 times more, only the base statoins need be licenced here. Again some standardisaton will help to create and develop standards such as Wimax(802.16) from which we will get enormous economies of scale over the next 3-4 years.

Still dunno why it takes 4 weeks when the issues were asubstantively agreed 2 years ago.

Just because there are emu farms here, doesn't mean the Minister for Agriculture can go to CAP negotiations saying we're an emu-based economy

    No doubt they will.

To be fair we can't blame ComReg for the 4 week duration of the event in GVA. It is run by a UN organization. The UN is controlled by 190 governments. Surely the ultimate in state control and political xyzery.

If they didn't turn up and some unfavourable to Ireland decision was taken, we'd be screaming and shouting!

450Mhz (out of a total 1000Mhz) allocated to BB in the 5Ghz band

    move over 802.11b :D
