The NDA on Galaxies has been dropped. One beta tester told me the following:

    Extremely buggy,
    Lacking in content,
    Prone to crashing,
    Boring,
    Needing a monster spec,
    Awful combat,
    Laggy interface,
    Incomplete skills,
    Crashing servers.

    Uh-oh

Hopefully these bugs can be fixed in time for release but I don't know about the boring one.....

Another beta tester then countered that with:

    "Well...IMO:

    Extremely buggy, god yes.
Lacking in content - hardly. Theres 10 planets, 14kmx14km in size, with static dungeons, dynamic quests, theme parks, PvP battlefields, hundreds of different species of creature.
Prone to crashing - Not in my experience
Boring - The opposite for me
Needing a monster spec - Bollocks. My gf is comfortably playing it on a 450mhz with a GF2MX card.
Awful combat - I disagree again, its fun, especially in groups with different roles, and pets.
Laggy interface - Yes, very laggy, especially the ingame market system (Bazaar) and crafting.
Incomplete skills - Yes, it seems they have just made it really slow to advance to give them time to work out the bugs
Crashing servers - He means when they reset servers after adding patches, and this happens several times a day, in beta.

Im going to hit the sack now, but I have a vast amount of stuff to post tomorrow."

So theres some consensus on the technical aspects but as to whether or not the game is actually fun to play or boring I think it might end up coming down to personal taste.

finally, let me tell you about my tale in the galaxies universe :)

i got the around the same time as Meglome and I was ecstatic with pleasure to beta this damn promising game. First it started off with a 2 day marathon of downloading 2gigs of game files and patches. the tutorial was fun and helpful for a starter, i felt it didnt explain the skills too much since nobody wanted to answer my wookie calls in the game. for people to talk to me, they needed to know wookie, the language. cool. later i learned a bunch of other stuff form some guy that was keen on helping others.

i was located in Mos Espa, one of the port cities on Tatooine. it looked fantastic except for the massive fps issues it caused when you were in a city surrounded by other players, it was crawllling on my athlon xp 2000+ with a geforce4 ti4400 128megs, and a gig of ddr ram. i was lucky to push 10fps in the city when i looked at the ground. not impressed. i left the laggy city of Mos Espa to check out the desert and start my wookie camp to check out my camping and trapping skillz. :) frame rate was fine in the desert. it was peaceful except for random npc enemies trying to kill me. the only way to survive was to fight or to run away, and man did i run. i was running everywhere, from one job to another, away from massive monsters (cant remember the names) and to locations of people who could teach me the skills i needed to advance in the game. when i got there, he wasn't there, probably killed by other players practicing their aims. what a waste of running. then i run back, and walked when i couldnt run, then back to running. then the server would reset for a new patch and my location would be reset to some hours previous. so i had to run the same way again. it kinda got boring and i finally decided that this isnt the mmorpg i'm looking for (pun intended).

anyway, i wasnt impressed at all with the game. hopefully once they implement the vehicles it wouldnt be too much hassle to play.

Jesus, the reviews have been pretty damning so far.

I havent seen to many positive reviews of this game's beta. most of the issue with the game type posts are getting deleted with on the main SWG forums even tho they quite well written.

The biggest complaint seems to be lack of anything to do. The quests are awful and boil down to 2 types....

1)Run all over a city or planet or to another planet and deliver a package.
2)Run all over a city or planet or to another planet and kill something.

The lenght of time it takes seems to indicate that vehicles were ment to be used for this and with out them its just a farce.

The GFX while nice dont make me go WOW. The housing is messed up as all you get is an empty house and anything you place in them goes poof.

The skills part of the game seems to bet like everyother MMORPG out there and seems to require vasts amounts of credits to train and the only way to get credits is to do the boring missions.

I honestly cant see myself getting this game for at least 6 months to a year and thats if it even lasts that long.

    woah..

I was thinking of getting into a MMORPG again but then I asked myself the question "In the end, what the **** do I get for playing an MMORPG?" They're not the kind of games you can sit down and play for an hour and then be done with it for the day.
So I decided not to get SWG which I had planned to do.
After reading this I'm even happier with my decision :)

Where can I find more NONBIASED reviews? Stuff which hasn't been "allowed" by Sony themselves.

Person was banned for posting this in the SWG forums.

This guy doesn't like it because when he critisized it, he was banned and called a child molestor by the fanboi's.

They contain peoples views, but the first one is pretty intresting review. From what I see of boards around the place the game is getting slated by the Beta testers.

Is it just me? I can't detect any deep role-play or storyline in this game at all.. just massively multiplayer increase-my-stats-and-build-stuff.

    Teeth.

That's just so ****ed that they keep banning people even for such a well constructed review. I hope the game gets **** reviews and goes down the drain :) At least 'til they FIX it.

Aye. Both those reviews were very fair but Sony/Verant dont accept any negitive remakes about there products on there forums. Also note, that if you get banned from a Sony/Verant forum your also banned from playing the game the forum is based on.

    Ok SWG

I would say that I've played more than anyone here so.
The biggest complaint seems to be lack of anything to do. The quests are awful and boil down to 2 types....

100% True right now, but I expect that to change reasonably quickly.
The GFX while nice dont make me go WOW. The housing is messed up as all you get is an empty house and anything you place in them goes poof.

The grahics are great if you have a top of the range beast to turn everything on. Otherwise they are good but not great. Stuff has stopped dissapearing and to be honest it never happned to me anyway.
Is it just me? I can't detect any deep role-play or storyline in this game at all.. just massively multiplayer increase-my-stats-and-build-stuff.

    Teeth.

Again 100% True, but again I expect this to change pretty quickly.
    Extremely buggy,
    Lacking in content,
    Prone to crashing,
    Boring,
    Needing a monster spec,
    Awful combat,
    Laggy interface,
    Incomplete skills,
    Crashing servers.

Not very buggy at all, they have cleaned it up a huge amount. Especially in the last week.
Still quite a few content issues.
    Not prone to crashing now.
Boring, well depends, still needs work but it's probably still the best mmorpg ever made.
It does need more work on mobs.
Combat, it greatly improved but still not 100%.
Interface is not laggy. Bazaar still not 100%
Skill have been fixed but not 100%.
Servers only go down a fraction as often.
i was located in Mos Espa, one of the port cities on Tatooine. it looked fantastic except for the massive fps issues it caused when you were in a city surrounded by other players, it was crawllling on my athlon xp 2000+ with a geforce4 ti4400 128megs, and a gig of ddr ram. i was lucky to push 10fps in the city when i looked at the ground. not impressed.

Very true I have the exact same problem.

The biggest killer for me is that there are no vehicles, as an Artisan and Architech I need a lot of resources, especially as I mainly build high end structures. I can end up walking around for hours which is a real pain in the arse. Overall this is potentially the best mmorpg ever but it still needs more work. I think personally I'll wait until the European release, which I understand is in December.

Preordered mine from www.gamestop.com should be here Monday. I have no huge expectations for this game, I'm not one that gets hyped about everything so I'll enjoy playing it.

Er that dosent make any sense!
People are not giving SWG bad reviews due to them being fanbois and looking forward to the game. They are giving the game bad mark due to it being a steaming pile of bathna fodder :)

A bad game is a bad game, wheither you have looked forward to it or not. Cant see myself touching this for at least 6 months/ or the features that were cut are added, which ever comes first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,980 ✭✭✭meglome

The big problem is that people in the main agree it still has many faults but they are still mostly going to buy it. Ok it's not quite a 'big pile of bantha fodder' but it isn't finished either.

The beta ended last night and I must admit I'll miss playing it but waiting for the European release is the right thing to do... however painful that may be now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Well in spite what I've read I've decided to give it a go myself, thats the only way I'll ever know if I'll actually like it or not. I should have my copy by Monday or so. I won't be able to make a full verdict on it myself until then.

You do know that you probably won't be able to play if your in Europe? It's only a US release.

Asherons Call 2 did the same thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 161 ✭✭Detonated Sauce

Well I suppose the hundreds of other people who did the same will have the same problem then.

You sound like you don't believe me. The European release isn't set until around December.

AC2 did something similar where people who didn't have an certain credit card they couldn't play the game.

Likewise with erm, Jumpgate (or a certain space sim. It's a while when I played it). They basically had outsourced the servers to other companies who then owned the customers in that area. So Europeans couldn't log into US servers. Also with Jumpgate the software was regional locked, so buying a US copy meant you could never use a european server.

I would be intrested to see if you get it working. Btw, the collectors edition allows you to get items that the normal player cannot get.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 161 ✭✭Detonated Sauce

I have read that they will not check what country you are in when using your credit card, I'm pretty sure it will work. Let me try find where I read it

Check this station.com thread where a games dev talks about eclipse being an "unofficial" european sever. So, you should be able to play from Europe.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 161 ✭✭Detonated Sauce

Yeah thats the one, thanks Jilm. My PA is based in eclipse so thats where I will be playing

If you are on a cap will this game Take up ur cap like wild fire or will it be moderate?

  • Registered Users Posts: 172 ✭✭paddyman

Stormfox dont ever worry about any online games taking up your cap as actually playing the game they dont tranfer huge amounts of info. The only thing that might be a problem is if you have to download large files as part of the game I.E initial game, updates, new maps, patches or something although most wont have this problem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 833 ✭✭✭Stormfox1020

Yea i guess, Plus the good thing about patches and Maps is that you only need to download them once off, so it should be fine. Hopefully.

Theres currently no problem playing from EU on US servers with a US copy.

IGN.com had an announcement stating that LucasArts wont give you any support, and the lag may be bad.

but who cares what they think right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 138 ✭✭Beck Amerdam

Star Wars Galaxies is awful. Tripe, complete rubbish and incredibly boring.
Basically the only monsters that even specialist warriors are able to kill amount to little more than giant rats, spiders and butterflies and even then it's a struggle for the most part. Sure theres big komodo dragons and all but from what I've read about the team of people brave enough to go to endor is that 50 of them were incapicated by monkies and the other 30 or so were killed by a lone ewok. I gave up about 2 weeks ago after getting to the top of my pistol skill then realising I had to start all over again with a different weapon. The game isn't even hard in terms of gaining skill it's just that they buff up the xp requirement so much that it takes days and days to get anywhere at higher levels.
What annoys me most of all though is the fanboys. Theres far too many people willing to give all their money to LucasArts at the moment in the vain hope that six months down the line the character wipes, the server crashes, the endless bugs, the totally empty content and incredible tedium will be fixed and we can all actually go into space and forget about the terrible butterfly related combat. Although I fear LucasArts are already designing space rats and butterflies to haunt the die-hards in space. This account on the other hand is well and truely closed.

Beck Amerdam while everyone is entitled to their opinion and if you dislike the game then thats your call, but from reading your post it seems you had such problems due to using crap weapons. The tools you use are very important in this game so buy the very best and you will own most mobs you meet.

I was soloing fambaa's last night for an easy 2500 exp per kill, solo using nothing more than a kick ass scout blaster 59/160 1.6 using just bodyshot 1 and threathen shot. Last night using a player made cdef carbine I got off a master weapons smith, i did the first level in carbine, then switched to a EE11 rifle I got in the bazaar for 2.5k 60/2?? 4.9 and got halfway through carbine 3 all in under 1 hour just killing the mobs near Thead.

Like any MMORPG, any time spent on a web board tips/guide section is always time well spent.
