    hi.
does anyone know what adsl modems are provided with which services and which ones are easly rigged up with linux.
we're having a awful time getting people to give us staright answers ...
so far we've been told that esat provides either the ericson HM220 or the HM120

I cant get info on these anywhere for some reason. anything I have found has been in Italian.

    any ideas?
What about other providers? any problems with modems?
if so which ones and which work with out to many problems.

    Chris

any external ethernet modem should work, the setting s are held on the modem itself in the flash memory which is generally accessed through a browser based interface, you should have no problems with those kind. On the whole the PCI models just don't work, avoid them, as for USB the more common ones are supported like the alcatels but generally on a patchy basis. It varies from distor to distro with USB.

If don't mind playing with PPPoE daemons and patching your kernel then you can get most USB modems working with linux. If you just want to plug it in and have it work straight away then get an ethernet modem. Any OS that uses the standard networking protocols will work fine with it. I got a DSL-300+ from Elara and haven't had any problems with it.

Using a standard dlink dsl -504 works fine with linux, is all webconfigured, for simple easy setup just set eth0(if you have just one network card) to use dhcp and turn nat on in the 504 on and all works perfectly.

This isnt particularily safe firewall wise, but will get you hooked up (its not safe windows wise either)

To add to the previous post, turning nat on didnt hold for some reason, had to tell it to restore factory defaults and resetup the adsl connection etc then it held nat on, if you are buying a dlink 504 and nat is off (out of box), just restore factory config first then set it up.

Dunno why this is the way it works..but it does work.
