Netsource offer 2 options SOHO, and SME i cant see any difference between the two except the price. Can anyone tell me wut makes SME different from SOHO thats costs nearly 35 euro more?

I think the only difference is the contention ratio..sme - 24:1 and soho 48:1.

    ..from this thread...Broadband availability

Wut does Contention Ratio Mean?? How Stable ur ping will be?

The SME is ADSL and the SOHO is RADSL.

The contention ratio is the number of ppl that share a 10Mbit (think it's 10Mb anyway) connection at the exchange

basicall its how many ppl u share your line out of the exchange with...this page has better explanation...Contention Ratios

Ah so basically on SME there will be less users on the same sorta line and my pings will be smoother than a 48:1 line.

Yes. Smoother but higher. Here's my pings on Netsource's Business package:

    Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
    (C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

    C:\DOCUME~1\KEVINO~1>ping www.boards.ie

Pinging www.boards.ie [217.114.166.147] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 217.114.166.147: bytes=32 time=61ms TTL=57
    Reply from 217.114.166.147: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=57
    Reply from 217.114.166.147: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=57
    Reply from 217.114.166.147: bytes=32 time=63ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for 217.114.166.147:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 61ms, Maximum = 63ms, Average = 62ms

Those pings aren't incredibly low or anything but they're very stable and you don't have the wildly variably quality that seems to go with the Netsource RADSL option.

Hey sloth u got SME rite?? Well im gona get that, i jus want it for Xbox live and online gaming not fussed on d/l speeds. 60m aint bad at all so i can live with that. Im gona be really happy when i get that :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Yes I have SME. 53.2k solid download speeds and solid pings. Good enough for me. It's also very easy to set it up for Xbox Live so you should have no problems with it (god forbid you should have the install probs I had, I wouldn't wish those 2 weeks on anyone). Good luck with it and tell me how it goes.

lol ok, this sounds like the one for me, and lucky for me im able to get it (Hurray!), but gotta wait Till september (nnnnoooooooo). But looks good with decent pings. Did u have troubles setting the Live up or The Connection itself?? Cuz if u had trouble getting a UK credit card and post code i can get that easy cuz my dads moms welsh and has both :)

Hey sloth How come your only getting a 60 ping with SME while people who have I-stream are getting 30-40 pings?? We have same speeds and same contention ratio, so wuts wrong?? is it because less people are using Eircom???

Well I havent seen anything under 55ms on eircom adsl. The people you're talking about probably have RADSL

    Wuts the difference??

Eircom turned interleaving down low for the RADSL packages but kept it at the normal level for the ADSL packages. Their reasoning for this? Who knows

Interleaving turned down is good rite?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭BArra

if eircom told u september ur exchange will be upgraded chances are they are lieing and just trying to tell u what u wanna hear to get you off the phone

maybe september 2006 ur looking at

Ive rang them 3 times to check when it will be enabled and they said its in the roll out for september all 3 times so hopefully it will be in by september but im gona keep ringin em jus in case :)

If you're looking for the best pings possible then interleaving turned off would be even better, but eircom won't do it. Esat business option (from esat excahanges) have it turned off tho.

I cant get Esat Buisness :( It sucks so ill have to go for the next best thing for gaming, any suggestions i could probably get everything else

Business ADSL pings off Eircom (Eg Netsource, Eircom): 50-90ms
RADSL pings (IOL, Eircom and presumably UTV): 30-60ms
    Netsource RADSL pings: 30-500ms

Netsource Business should do you grand, ok so pings aren't amazingly low like IBB or Esat Business but it's still very playable and it's easy to set up for Xbox Live. Your guaranteed your 512k speeds too unlike RADSL.
