To those with experience in the various forms/styles of martial arts :

I'm a college student interested in taking up a martial art and would like to hear some opinions/recommendations. I am looking for something which is focused more on self-defence, rather than competition based sparring. My reasons for wanting to take up a martial art are as follows: I did Kung Fu, with SCMAA as a kid a good few years ago now, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had to give it up however after about a year due to commitment to another sport. I've been out of competitive sports now for about 2 years and I am giving serious thought to taking up a martial art for fitness. Having trained with SCMAA as a kid, I am considering going back there, but I am open to suggestions of any other suitable martial art.

If anyone could recommend an art and/or school, it would be much appreciated. If anyone out there does Kung Fu with SCMAA - I would love to hear your opinions about SCMAA.

I did ITF Tae kwon do with a club in stillorgan for about a year and half. The instructor there is excellent, it's a great club.

I didn't really like the destruction (breaking boards) aspect of it.

I went to a kenpo club in dundrum aswell (ed parker kenpo):

The class is fast-paced. The techniques are cool but not always that practical and there's an awful lot to learn (forms, techniques, sets). I preferred the ITF sparring to the kenpo tournament sparring, it doesn't stop every time a point is scored. The kenpo hand techniques are pretty slick.

I damaged my knee recently and after it healed I decided to look for something a bit more physical, so I popped along to the Bridgestone Muay Thai club in town for a class or two. This is really good... they have a much better approach to training - loads of pad work and you're working with a partner most of the time. You'll get fit fast doing this! I dropped TKD and kenpo and will keep this up next year.
