Problem with FuhQuake-GL

Right, having installed this many times before, successfully, I can't figure out what is wrong in this case. I installed it on a few 2GHz Win2K machines, with gammy 16MB graphics cards (not mine BTW ;)). I can get normal quake/qw to run, but any openGL rendered versions just won't work. OpenGL is installed on all machines, ie. opengl32.dll, etc is located in the %WinDir%\system32 dir. The only other problem I had in the past with qw was that, it came bundled with an older version of the opengl32.dll, which was located in the working dir, and was used instead of the one in %WinDir%\system32 (so a quick fix, sorted that). I must point out in that instance I got an error dialog, describing the problem, but this time I get nothing. All that happens is that the machine goes to change resolutions, and bang it's back to my desktop again, at the same resolution, with no further attempts to get the game running, nor are there any messages explaining why it's bombed out.

It's pissing me off royally. I'm running the latest versions of qw client/server & fuhquake with security patches, etc.

    anything you can suggest?

Copy opengl32.dll from System to the Quake folder. Problem Solved?

Are you sure that would work, considering it's on the system path already (%WINDIR%\System32) and also it's the only version of the dll that exists on the machine (so it can't be conflicting or overridden by some other version, also on the path).

However I will give it a try, but if it works I will be surprised.

I haven't checked to see what graphics subsystem exists in the machine, but I have observed other people playing Soldier of Forutune 2, at a decent res, and getting a very acceptable FPS, so it can't be that bad ;)

Those machines are running with ATi Radeon 7000s afaik.
You need to find out the model number (System properties should show you the light, failing that dxdiag.exe in %WinDir%\system32 should help) then download the newest Catalyst drivers for the cards and install em.

hopefully that'll get your OpenGL working.
If not, grow a shmig and install RedHat (or a beard and Debian). ATi has better driver suppport for loobix when compared with nVidia, but the reverse the is case under windows.
    Phobos, if you want, GalwayLAN6
Still a few places left, and we're looking at a big dirty wodge of Quake. Tis being held in the Bank of Ireland Theatre (beside the college bar) in NUIG too.
Jaden, you're name is already down.
Should have a nice prize for the duel compo.

Jaden; hmmm you have a point, so the working dir it is, then. Q2???, Dude I'm old skool (maybe not in gaming terms), but I know enough to keep away from that. If I recall I was the one that described it as Disney Quake, when it was first released ;)

John; Thanks for the offer, we'll see. I just stuck another 512megs of the good stuff in to my own machine about an hour ago, and she's been very well behaved since. As regards *nix driver support, I actually have said machines dual booting already, so that's always an option.

Jaden; Right I did that and no joy :(

The exact same thing happens. I launch the fuhquake-gl executable, and the screen goes black, attempts to change res, then bails out back to the desktop again, with no explanation dialog.

Actually if I recall fuhquake-gl has some command line options, I'm going to try and see if I can get it running in a window instead of fullscreen (using the "-window" arguement, or what ever it is).

i`m having similar trouble, installed qwcl, and downloaded glide2x.dll i get a genport error or something.

Running win2k, dx8.1, intel onboard gfx, wots the dealio

Right I tried the "-window" parameter on the command line, and it worked. So I've narrowed down the problem to, being unable to init fullscreen mode using OpenGL.

Window mode is pants in all fairness, but at least I've proved that OpenGL is installed, and working (well apart from the whole fullscreen mode thing in FuhQ) ;)

Phobos, install newer drivers for those cards, what SP you running?

Baz, Intel onboards suck. We had awful hassle getting them to run CS/Quake in OpenGL in college on some machines (NT4.0 SP6a, Intel 815/810s)

Jaden, are you coming along this weekend or are you busy?

Yeah I thought that myself. I'll give it a few days though, kinda busy atm. No time for games *shudder* ;)

Dude, did I see you in the college bar today, with a HAIRCUT!!. All I can say is congratulations, it's about time. You really took the attention off David Hasslehof there for a while. No more porno contracts for you bud :p

BTW have a good weekend lads. If I'm not too busy I'll drop down for a gawk ;)
