ISDN max 128 k??

    Why is it that a digital line can only get up to 128k?? when if u revert back to an standard phone line .. and alter the frequencies used you can reach 512k? and faster (adsl) Is there and isdn equivilant to dsl? surely a digital line goes faster thatn 128k?


    Was just pondering there.. prolly a really basic answer to this.

    Well its kinda like asking why one car can do 80mph and another can do 200mph. It wasnt designed to do more than 128k.
    There are advantages to ISDN of course disadvantages. (ISDN has a much longer range than say adsl and is much more tolerant of noise and stuff).

    Im sure there are other reasons which im sure someone will give :)

    It's basically down to the design of the technology don't forget ISDN is now ancient technology it's around a long time and when it was designed 128K was pretty damn fast. The speed is a limitation of the technology but as the previous poster said it is also very robust as it is a full digital line with really good error correction where dsl is running across an analog carrier which is not as immune to errors and consequently any error correction used also serves to increase the overall latency to the dismay of alot of people here. I would say in the future ISDN may possibly be redesigned to be capable of much greater speeds.
