hi - im buying a dell P4 and was just wondering...
they have different Dimension Products each differing in chipsets like Intel 845GV or Intel 875P. What do these do and is there a big difference between them?

    Cheers

875p is the newest chipset from Intel (canterwood), the 865p and 875p support the Intel "800FSB" Chips. The older chipsets (vast majority) support 400mhz / 533mhz FSB chips.

If your not into overclocking, theres not that much of a spec difference. Extra bit saved would get u a 2.8 instead of a 2.6 !!

consult don't buy from dell, buy from www.elara.ie. Their range of parts is quite good and price wise they are excellent.
BTW if you are comparing the specs of the dell u want and an elara equivalent at the same cost, be aware that elara use much higer quality parts then dell do in general. (i.e. ocz or mushkin ram)

    Or build it yourself :p

Definetly in agreement there, elara make much sweeter systems than dell & the added options are excellent too.

If your looking to build your own then komplett.ie is your friend.

The new Intel chipsets (865 and 875) support onboard (native) SATA and more importantly dual channel DDR, giving them a large performance increase over the old 845 range. As COL_LOKI said the new chipsets (officially) support every FSB upto 800MHz as well.

The 875 in particular supports CSA and PAT as well. PAT is a performance enhancer (over 865) and CSA is a dedicated 1Gb LAN connection, bypassing the slow PCI bus.
