It took me roughly 4 minutes? :)

I have 2 phone extensions in my house.. the main one downstairs used to have a splitter, one line going to the phone, the other running to the computer.. I just replaced that splitter with the dual microfilter esat provided me with.. The other extension upstairs I just put the microfilter between the phone line and the socket.. (like it hooks up to the socket, and the other end hooks up to the end of the phone cable)

Connected my USB modem.. hooked it up to the phone line, said no hardware was found, inserted cd, it installed the drivers and automatically set up Esat's IOL Broadband connection.

All I did then was enter my username@iolbb and password, and in under a second I was connected at 512Kbps (Connects faster than ISDN).

    Another quick question

    Bizmark, synkronite..

We're yee at home when the modem's were delivered...or did they fit through the letterbox??? might seem like a stupid question...but I dont want to miss my modem..

one other thing...what was the delivery time on da modems 2days?

I wasnt at home, it fit through my letterbox.. It wasnt that big.. about the same length as a shoe box, but half the height.. They put it through the letterbox. Although Ive told my postlady she can do that with big packages as I have a little table (so nothing falls and breaks).

I believe my modem took two days.. (mailed out on Monday and arrived on Wednesday) According to EsatBT anyway..

    Hi,

I sent in my application on the 9th of june, they called me the 10th to inform me that the setup of the phone (BT advantage) would take 7 days and ADSL would take 12 (working days)

I called them a few times to find out where my modem was, lastly this tuesday, she stated I would have the modem before thursday... already yesterday the modem arrived, was quite impressed with that.

When I got back from work, I set it up, took about 2 minutes plus the installation on XP... ok, ready to log on... username and password did not work, at least not as they were given to me, so I had to call their techsupport, which was quite a lengthy process (30 minutes on hold) but when I actually got through the guy sorted me out in a few minutes... Connected to 512 kbs.

Problem I had yesterday was that the connection was really unstable, ping in games was not playable. I could ping www.boards.ie and get an average of 912ms !!!

This morning however I pinged the same address quite a few times and in all instances got 30ms or less. If it could just stay at that level all the time, it would actually be useable for online gaming.

Anyone have any hints for tweaking or anything like that to make the connection more stable???

I used to have a 2mbit connection when I lived in Denmark (we got that connection in the year 2000 !!), so it might just be that I have been spoiled...

    //Jaques

    Hey Daz,
they promised delivery on the 1st. I'm hoping tomorrow, otherwise it'll be another 56k weekend -
i'm surprised they knew you by name, you must have been nastier to them than i have:D
    anyways, fingrz crossed.

Just off the phone with IOLBB.

I had guessed at 11th July and that looks about right. The (very polite and helpful) lady said my line activation is expected early next week and I should have the modem by the end of next week (11th).

Not holding my breath at this stage.

So that will be 20 working days from when I handed over my username and password.

Well hopefully IOL will have sorted out their network probs by the time I'm hooked up.

Congrats to Bizmark, Synkronite and Jaques. Keep pinging and posting! :)

    Hopefully tomorrow for you Ancient1.

Looks like we'll be in the same batch Mr.Daz.

    thanks dudes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

i played star trek bridge commander on gamespy.......... which really depends on the amounth of 56ker,s in the server

mostly the pings to servers are 100ms - 600ms *if hosted by 56k or many 56kers in it*

    Stokolan,
same here. Been waiting since Monday, so today is the long wait.

    Daz,
it will be my pleasure. However, i cannot guarantee that i'll be able to display your diplomatic finesse. Sounds like supmin from the Department of Health and Children "members of public (and employees of Esat) are advised by the minister not to eat yellow snow" :D

    Later dudes.

    which courier service?
in my long and desolate wait i imagine the courier dressed in red, with a long white beard, distributing modems from house to house....:D

Had been hoping my modem would arrive today, as they told me on Wednesday that I should have it "in a couple of days". No such luck. Rang them again about an hour ago. Apparently, is was actually shipped yesterday (Thursday) and they say I should get it on Monday. Bummer - another 56K weekend.

By the way, I was also told that the modems are shipped directly by Ericsson, not by EsatBT. Surprising that - not the fact that they're being shipped directly by the supplier, but that the supplier is Ericcson - didn't know they were in this area of the telecoms business. Also, they ship them from Dublin - I had been wondering if they shipped from somewhere further south, seeing as the Leesiders seem to have been prominent among the first few people to get them.

Just curious - can any of the lucky few who have their modems lets us know anything technical about them? Make, model, whatever - and is there any mention of Ericsson? I'm hoping to use the modem with Linux (ssshhh - don't tell Esat!), so a model number and a bit of googling may be required, if I'm to find the right driver. An FCC ID (long number prefixed with FCC) is often useful for that sort of search, by the way. :)

Cheers, and happy surfing to the bandwidth-blessed among us.
