Please read my post on the future of IGN and quake.ie

As with regards Ed...
He'll probably kill me for saying this...

A little over a week ago, me and Ed were driving around Castlebar "cruisin" as they say and we ended up (as we invariably do) talking about quake.ie and IGN as a whole.
The lad was seriously down about the whole thing - between lack of resources and all the grief he's getting from muppets like us for this, that and the other. Ed was scarred to switch his mobile phone on for the past 3 months for Christ's sake!!!

The fact of the matter is, it's too long a story to say here, but we're gonna have to accept that unless the IGN can afford to *PAY* TInet compensation for time lost because one of they're workers (i.e. Connor) was bust looking after a non-profit organisation's games servers/websites/ftp/whatever the hell, we're not gonna have the *perfect* set up - at least not for the present.

That's about the whole of it...

Dav
(who's most likely gonna be shot by Ed)

PS:
I just want ppl to know I'm not saying anything on behalf of Ed, the IGN or quake.ie - I'm saying this as a concerned Quake player

I pay tinet 145quid a year. how many other quakers pay them the same? I know thats not the angle you and ign are coming from but twist it around a bit. we quakers pay tinet & telecom quite a large amount of money.

no whining arsie anal childish replys about above please, either to agree or disagree. feel free to continue the discussion thou.

Right. Since there seems to be such depth of feeling on this, I'm gonna lay my cards on the table.

To my mind, the IGN did a very good job under very difficult conditions for the first few months of their existence, and all credit to the team that were responsible for that, and especially to Eddie.

Then... it all fell apart.

There are a number of factors to blame for that as far as I can see, and nobody comes out smelling of roses. TINet have completely failed to support the IGN properly, with their main failing, as Dav outlined, being that they won't release Conor for even half a day a week to admin the servers. Eddie himself failed completely to delegate any of the running of the organisation, and despite the alleged existence of a council - although nobody seems to know who's on it - once Eddie wasn't there, nothing was happening at all. Essentially what we saw was a classic case of people making commitments to do things which they then found themselves unable to cope with.

The IGN has other major flaws. Despite being the Irish _Games_ Network, it's really the Irish Quake Network. Catering for other games just isn't their style, and while most of you probably don't complain, this channeled attitude is certainly not good for online gaming - in fact, it's incredibly damaging. Although Gamer.ie is still "in the works", the level of work I and others have put into it is not in any way paralelled by the level of support I have received. So understandably, I'm more than a little bit bitter, given that I've made a fool of myself both with other writers and in magazine articles where I made commitments to the site being up based on promises made by the IGN.

The IGN suddenly resurfacing and apparently telling us all to go to Quakenet was, for the the final straw. And if anyone feels offended by my outburst, live with it.

By the way, I'm not writing this as a concerned Quake player. I'm writing it as a concerned online games player who doesn't want to see this whole fledgling area of gaming in Ireland sink beneath a sea of Quake-obsession and general bad running of things.

Ja na,
Shinji

A VERY valid point Butch...

A point I'm sure has been brought to their attention.

DISCLAIMER - I'm not saying anything on behalf of IGN or quake.ie - fact of the matter is - I don't have anything to do with any of it - I just help run the league <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Rob - you posted just before I did <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/curlydav.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT="@B^)">

A lot of what you're saying about IGN kinda dissappearing and now re-surfacing is due to the fact that Ed is in a busy year of college...
Also - it's never been away, as I said in another post somewhere tonight, Ed was too busy looking after quake.ie as best he could.

Now that certain developments have unfolded, quake.ie and IGN will BOTH start moving forward. We will atlast see gamer.ie making a welcome launch and kali.ie doing whatever kali.ie is supposed to do (I play Quake and so I don't know a thing about it).

I suppose all we can do is wait... to my knowledge it won't be long!!!

Actually Rob I asked people to move to QuakeNet, put in a general plea on my own behalf because I think it's best for the Quake community, it wasn't an official IGN message <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/tongue.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":P">

Ok then, 'Damn IGN' for maintaining an excellent service we all enjoyed which they wrenched out from under us when we least expected it without so much as a single explaination or any indication as to when the servers (or web site, or ftp site) would be back.

That Ok?

I think that since this board is the 'official' IGN one, that they should make an 'official' post here *every* time something happens that affects their users.

Indeed, they can post a weekly update every friday, just after they collect their paychecks.

There ARE things afoot with quake.ie, but not eveyone has time to spend posting to boards etc. But change is coming and it should be a return to the old days in more ways then one.

you have a pointish, there is no way to even contact eddie, which i was trying to do yesterday as the only mail addy on the site is eddie@quake.ie and that mail server has been down for ages.

ftp should never go back up, its a waste of good quake bandwidth, download yer mods from the uk.

DB in barrysworld mailed me back and hes building the servers atm to run bookable q2 battleground mods. this is where HIV will train from now on. we'll setup a training pact with a reliable clan (*ahem*) and play against each other ever week.

[FX: Shin-chan hitting Cloud with a Clue Stick (TM)]

Well next time you do that, put a Kharn-esque disclaimer on the end, ok? I'm sure Dav will licence you his for a small fee... ^_^

Anyway... how are we meant to seperate "official" IGN announcements from announcements that Cloud (and Kharn... "nothing against IOL, but that's the official place - afaik IGN is getting into Quakenet" - and there was no disclaimer on that one...) decides to make that look like official IGN announcements?

Bah.

Ja na,

I was just getting kinda sick of typing the disclaimer all the time. Everyone know's I'm not an IGN rep...I'm not even a quake.ie Rep - or at least I wouldn't consider myself anything of the sort!
I help on the league, there it ends...

Anything I post is usually my own opinion or stuff I've heard <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/curlydav.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT="@B^)">

PS:
Rob - I thought u had a hand in the IGN...what happened? You seem very *against* it (for SERIOUS want of a better word) all of a sudden.
