This from a press release today from Norwegian state owned Statoil and Telenor:
Statoil Detaljhandel AS and Telenor today announced the launch of wireless Internet zones at 300 Statoil petrol stations throughout Norway. The deployment is one of Europe's largest Wi-Fi ("wireless fidelity") rollouts and Statoil is the first major gas station chain to offer its customers wireless access. The solution, based on industry-standard WLAN technology (Wireless Local Area Network), allows business and private users to access E-mail and Internet Services from Statoil Petrol Stations all over Norway.
    Something for Statoil Ireland? :)

Sadly I wouldn't rely on this too much if this article is anything to go by....

    That's SO ironic.
Why are they always asking us to turn off our mobile phones at petrol stations????!

Actually you are missing the point completely ..

The point is you will not make money charging for metered or tokenised HotSpot access - but it is a relatively cheap way to differentiate your business from others..

In Ireland (before the price cuts on ADSL) one hotellier pointed out that it cost them more to clean the toilets than to provide unmetereted internet access to the guests .... and they don't charge guests to use the toilets....

Given the choice wouldn't you rather stay in a hotel with free internet access ?

And there isn't a pub / cafe in the city centre that couldn't easily adsorb the cost of a hotspot into it's overheads..

Costs - Shareable ADSL €3,000 pa - AP with NAT and DHCP built in, antenna and cable €600...
