Just wondering .. who or what is the ign?

I know it stands for irish games network, but that's about all I know. When was it set up and why and who's involved in it?

As far as I can tell, Mouserat set up quake.ie initially and cloud maintained it, running servers, site, etc - but neither of those two are (or were I think) in the ign.

Am I right in thinking that the ign are the people who contacted tinet about hosting servers/sites? And that they are the ones who took over quake.ie when cloud left?

I'm sure it does loads of work behind the scenes, but it sure doesn't let people know what it's doing, and who's doing it. In my experience, it's always better to give people visibility of your project list and you get much less grief. I've met Eddie and he's a nice chap btw.

Devore has the right idea - his plans for the irish team are out in the open and are looking really good. Maybe it's time the ign posted their plans for servers, irc and site maintenance roles for the next year or so.

(ok work is horrible today , I'll be gone tomorrow)

    Cheers!

    ewj.

by the way does anyone else think we irish overuse the word "muppet"?

Muppet! I don't know who the ign are really, maybe they're the muppets in muppet coloured clothing. As to using the muppet word, naaaaaaaaw! only a complete muppet would have the muppetry to use muppet too much. I mean we're not all muppets are we? What ever gave you the extremely muppetlike idea to ask a muppetty question like that?

    muppet....

I think that would be nice... if someone from the IGN just posted telling us who they are, what they do, and what they're planning to do, it would be a good step. Enough of their shadowy power

Just to clear up a few things, IGN set up quake.ie, not Mouserat (funny where these legends come from, I'm sure he'll have a laugh when he hears this one, Mark!). I was quake.ie administrator on behalf of the IGN from 1997 - 1998, and now it is not being administrated by one person as such, only by Eddie who has enough on his plate trying to get sister-sites like kali.ie up and running.

IGN is a non-profit organisation, kept going in people's _free time_ and currently sponsored by TInet.

They're not so shadowy actually! While I was in the IGN, the board members were myself, Eddie, Carnate, VisHnU and MindPhuck, although that has changed since I left my official quake.ie administrator capacity. Rob / Shinji-Kun was there for a while too, although he seems to be the new anti-IGN pope these days AFAICS

As for future plans, obviously that's up to Eddie but the main reason he should and has to lie low is because you get too many whiney letters every day asking for this, that and the other. This will no doubt continue (the "lying low") until a number of people accept responsibility for administrating each site, not just one person as was the case last year (Poor_Cloud).

On my behalf, all I can say is that the Cloud Boards will be moving to IGN once the TInet / Indigo office move is complete, I'm paying for this new server (getting it this week) out of my own pocket. An Irish IRC connection to QuakeNet will follow.

Yes Mark, its all true, I set up the IGN, plus I invented the whole concept of first person perspective computer games back in the sixties with a little know text based first person shooter called "Quack". Unfortunatley the only computer it ran on was too busy being used to design nuclear weapons at the time for the game to get much publicity until ID software set up their Microsoft invasion contingency plans and invested in a few thermonuclear warheads. The game came free and the rest as they say....

In case you're wondering what im doing, no I havn't returned to the world of Quake, and this is coincidentally the first message I have read on this board in about 2 or 3 months. Nice to see everyone is still yapping on about me, probably. Just to bolster my ego, im not going to bother checking by reading any of the other threads now.

Incidently Nog, did you ever hear what the outcome of that court case was, where Obi was suing Lucasfilm over alleged coppyright infringement?
    Just curious....
