The Irish Times is running a piece in Computimes regarding the France v Ireland international.

The following week they are going to run a piece on the Irish Quake Community.

Undoubtedly this will bring new players into the fold. The will have info on how to use the board and irc. They know about the servers and have been asked to use quake.iol.ie to learn the game. Hence quake.iol.ie has been switched over permanently to FFA and I would ask that all experienced players stay out of that server, as it would be real sad if you just fragged newbies for score.

They have been directed to #irishquake on irc so that some kind souls can help them with Comic chat etc. When they know the ropes we will introduce them to #quake.

I would ask ppl to be respectful of these new players. We all started somewhere and you never know , there may be a "slosh" or "Cloud" etc in there, who would add a lot to the community.

You never know WHO could be typing. There are several company directors already associated with Irish Quake, why not more? Who do you think reads the Irish Times?

So, stay frosty lads this *could* be the start of something big.

DeVore.

With this (hopeful) flood of new player, prehaps it might be a good idea if Cloud added another quake forum to his board to tackle the questions form these newbies. It would be easier on them and on us, the existing players. They wouldnt have to wade through the news and general spam to find useful information.

Today is the first I've heard of the Ireland v France game, and the computimes articles - some serious organisational skills seem to have apeared from somewhere since I last checked what was happening in the Quake community! Respect to whoever put in all that work.

OK, I know I dont play much any more but something I think is a good idea is that the experienced players don't necesarily need to avoid the newbies - in fact if the Times readers that turn up on the servers find them empty, I wouldn't be surprised if they leave again. However it should be blatantly obvious to experienced players who the newbies are and I would hope that you dont kill them as it would be tremendously annoying to them to die as soon as (probably before) they see an experienced player. Lets face it, you should be able to run around fighting each other and ignoring them for a few weeks without them posing any threat to you whatsoever.

Something that I remember and loved from when I first started playing was that the more experienced players then me when quake first came out were VERY helpful - if a newbie like myself asked a question about the location of a secret, one of the more experienced guys would find the newbie and lead him to what he wanted to find. Another day, I asked someone to show me how to rocket jump and he spent a good ten or twenty minutes showing me how (cheers Spandex).
And so on. If you want the newbies to play with you, some of you are going to have to go down to their level for a while at least... you get the idea, talk to them , tell them how to improve their game.

I hope if there ARE a lot of new players appearing on scene soon that all you guys with hundreds or thousands of hours of play behind you can spare some of your time teaching the newbies the ropes - I know I enjoyed doing it whenever I got a chance.

Not that its about showing off of course <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/wink.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=";)">

good call phil, it could be just a help thread, where the newbies write up their probs like 'how to turn on rl' etc <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">, and we can post in after, glance at the board every now and then to see if there are any probs.

Thought I should make a point here, one that might be better made by someone who plays both Quakes. I suspect newbies are going to hop on-line looking for a game of Quake 2!!!
For a start newbies will have to be pretty dedicated (and I do hope they are) to go get the patch to up Quake to 1.06 followed by Gamespy and blah blah.
The modern generation of gamers are going to have Quake 2 or Half-Life or SIN or ..... the list goes on. These games allow them to start immediately.
Obviously the publicity about Ireland in France etc. will make them a bit more determined but it's got to make them want to go out and buy Quake. If they are on the net and own Quake they will surely have tried it by now.
Gone are the good 'ol days when in 1996 myself and Flav played NetQuake with no QW and got it all to work in one evening. Damn but we were dedicated <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
Anyway I think we should have a more genuine IGN that trys to unite all gamers (all FPS at least). Why the Q and Q2 fraternitys remain so seperate is beyond me. And what of when Q3 arrives. Are we to have 3 distinct groups vying for their own niche?
Oh yeah - one final point. When I was a newbie it took a good 3-4 months on-line playing in Europe before I discovered the "Irish Community". In the time it took to find it I was an o.k. player and I do remember that getting whipped by experts made me come back for more and more to improve. By all means be helpful to newbies (I always have been) but make them learn quickly - no need for kid gloves. It's good, at least, to think that newbies coming on-line now will probably be aware of a community.

That's what I had in mind Ronan. We've got to remember that a lot of these guys may only be playing the game for the first time, or not very long at least, so they won't have a clue to begin with. Just remember that we were all beginners at one stage, and someone had to show patience when we were learning, so return the favour to the newcomers

Good job Devore! <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Can you scan and put the press release somewhere on the net so I can read it!!

Also someone don't forget to explain to the newbies the "Quake Tax", I reckon about 5 quid a head a month should about do it. Also get names, locations and phone numbers so if any of us need some shopping done we know which newbie to ring and will help not interfer with our game of Quake <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> (Well your games, I haven't played Quake or Quake2 in ages).

I was going to say something else, but I've forgotten... no wait... it's coming back. Whens this tourney in France? I should be back in Feburary, if it's happening around the time I'm back I might fly over for a day or so (never been to France<IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">)

in reply to musicians post,
to play on quakeworld servers, you dont need winquake or dos quake1.06.
you can install quake off your CD, and d/l quakeworld (2 megs or so), and thats it.

compared to the 13 meg d/l i had to get to actually be able to play q2 online, after installing q2 off the CD <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

• Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 8,947 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

I take the point koopa but the main thing I was getting at was what games newbies will have going on-line for the first time. They've had over 2 years to have Quake if they have a PC. If it's their first time on the Net then maybe they'll try but I would guess most newbies are kids with a new PC and internet connection and they'll more than likely have Q2 or want it. Not to be a chamion for Q2 but Ireland as far as I can see is one of the few places where Q2 is not universally accepted as a good DM game.

i sorta, um, agree with musician here. i didn't want to wade in and sorta say what he said as after all its the q1 lads that are putting all the time & effort in. so i sorta kept quite about it and thats damn difficult for me <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

these days barrysworld always has twice the number of q2 players than q1 players online. new players want new games. soz and don't lets get into a silly season argument about this. the large patches can be taken from most PC cover CD's so it isn't really an issue.

so, q2 lads, how many of you will stand up and do something for the irish q2 scene? actually put yourselves out and help new players? how about removing the custom maps on the ffa server and leaving it free for newbies? have some training sessions showing them basic moves and tactics? I can't really do this myself, too busy trying to keep HIV in Div2 of the UKCCL (ahhh i love saying that, div2 ukccl).

I'm sure players like Dr Teeth, Castor Troy, Cave & Shank plus a few others would be more than willing to organise this, WOULDN'T YOU ! simple things like setting rate correctly can be the difference between a player staying or leaving. I can drag a few lads online who haven't played much if we get this sorted.

WELL?

I must agree with Muso and the Butcher...

I'm not a Q2 player, but when it first came out - I did play it and my first ever post to the good ol' wwwboard was in relation to Q2 servers in Ireland (after that, I couldn't be ****d d/ling all that stuff so I stuck with what I knew <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/curlydav.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT="@B^)"> )

New players want new games - dead right Butch.
Having said that - I'd be happy to help a newbie if I see one on a Q1 server - but hey, I'm a nice guy, what can I say???

okey dokey.

i'll throw me socks in the ring if ya want.
id be more than willing to lend a hand wherever possible. im ususally on when not at work, on the ****, hockey training, on the **** or with the girlfriend or on the ****.

if there is a new channel set up on irc (#quakenewbie or whatever) i'll be happy to go there and help out and go onto the servers and show ppl around. just make sure all the newbies are from dublin and they can take me out for pints <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

as it is im suppose to be doin up a sort of newbie page for suds (its gonna be a while suds...sry) or at worst provide a whole lotta links to newbie information for q2. is anyone doin the same for quake?
as noggie says, most gamers will be playin the newer games (not that quake antique) and so may need help with them as well. if a newbie irc channel is formed shouldnt it be to do with all games instead?

and the wwboard newbie board is a good idea. the hassle i had with modems, patches and all sorts of stuff when i started was woeful. its thanks to ppl like flavouflav, tecno and dr teeth that im still here.

lets cherish and nurture these newbies. if they dont buy us pints after that... we ritually mutilate and disembowl them in stephens green. is that fair?

Ok, I'm not madly impressed with Q2 but each to his own.
The piece on the irish scene doesnt go out until the following week which gives yea a week to get sorted.
Post the names of the servers here and I'll have them included in the piece.
Most of the sites I sent to him are Q1/Q2 (like the Quakezone and this board) and the irc server etc... so if they have any head on their shoulders they can find us, if not I wouldnt fancy teaching them quake anyway.

So, Q2ers wassit gonna be? 8)

Gooo idea lads, the Q2 ffa server is rarly used by the regulars and to be honest if a newbie did actually manage to find himself on War1 it is next to impossible trying to get them to type in the correct commands to get the game going! I'll talk to the Shank man tonight and we'll sort something out with Ed over the next couple of days to sort out that old FFA server into something a bit more user friendly i.e. remove all the maps u need to download seperatly. We'll give it a nice new name too!

I think the point about the experienced players mixing with the new players is a good one. I for one started off getting my ass severely kicked (believe me, it was a hell of a lot worse than now <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> ) but I didn't really mind too much because I learned. The only thing I was not impressed with were the calls of MUPPET! simply because I did not know such and such or I had a name no-one recognised. I think if the experienced players mingle with the 'acolytes' they should not only refrain from going on a killing spree (and disheartening the eager peeps) but also refrain from indulging in elitism.

It would be good if the experienced played among the new. It would show levels of skill and give the others something to aspire to, some idea of what they can learn. Also, eventually they'll get the nerve to actively 'hunt' one of the experienced (maybe we should introduce a colour code? more later on that). Imagine the sense of achievement if a 'trainee' managed to kill Cloud or Bunny?

The colour suggestion.

The players are assigned colours that they can choose from. Of course there is nothing to stop people from picking "disallowed" colours, but I hardly think an experienced player would disguise themselves as a 'green' player unless he's deficient in a few faculties. Like morals, a sense of sair play, etc...
Anyway, reserve the brighter colours for the upper echelons of FFA. (So it's easier for people to spot them), the shirt colour is the only one that needs to be reserved, the rest doesn't really matter. That way experienced players can pick out who are legit targets from the 'civies'. Would it be difficult to put a colour menu up when someone connects to FFA? A list of experience, eg: new, trainee, competent, capable, adept, experienced, veteran, lord, master, what-the-hell-are-you-doing-here-you-should-be-on-indigo, .... etc..

well, another ramble comes to an anticlimactic end (that's getting to be a familiar feeling lately <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/wink.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=";)"> )

J.

PS. Do we really have to refer to them as 'Newbies'? It does sound derogatory (sp?) and some might take offence. Maybe when we talk to them we should refer to them as 'trainees'?

PPS. How about setting up a 'sponsor' system, where experienced players can 'suggest' that a new player progresses. (maybe this ties in with the colour coding idea?)

Well said lads we do need fresh blood in the quake and quake2 scene's(even if it will bring the usual % of muppets).
Dr teeth will you post the addy for that modem tune up page of yours as that help out on the pings to the severs a lot(yes I lost the addy again and need it <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">and if newbie's can actualy play either of the above mentioned game instead of just looking at the modem icon they might even stick around.

hmm i dunno, yee say yee'd help out these newbies..i dunno about that.....
to irc im no newbie but to quake playing im a newbie and crap and i regularly ask for help and get none, yet 99% of yee no me and no i cant play for love nor money

Whenever i ask for help (which is often) i get none e.g. i was told to wait for someone the other nite while they got me an autoexec.cfg which i had deleted by mistake and they forgot and over an hour later came backto me...what good is that?

that wont go down too well with a total newbie ....

been around almost a yr and still get little help.....( ta mp, mickah and blade tho coz they helped me whenever i asked..at times i just had that "lost" look about me and they stepped in and help me lots)....

like if yee wont help me out with one simple thing....why should anyone believe yee'd honestly help these newbies?...granted yee might for first few weeks or so but then the novelty wears off......other servers are full and ppl just ignore them then and take their one over.....( it happens believe me it does and it will happen)

whenever anyone has asked me for help i've seen it thru til they are happy and i tell them if they need anymore to come back to me..i've no trouble helping anyone and i'll help these ppl to the best i can no problem..im just so damn curious how this will work out when yee help someone yee no then rush off halfway thru for ca or a war, wonder what these ppl will think then ..........................................
t'will be very interesting to see

Ah yeah, Nog, stick my name down without asking, like!! <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> No, I'd be glad to help out anyone new who comes along, if and when they ask - all you gotta do is ask, ask and ye shall receive.

Long time now since I was a newbie Teeth, aarrrr I remember when you were a newbie yourself lad!! (i have lied somewhere in this post, can anyone spot it?)

Oh yes I remember my muppet days, when the war server had teams by skin, so I thought people with the same skin as me were cheating. Wait whats the green glow on that bloke on dm8 - he's cheating!! Then some kind soul (cant remember who, unfortunately) pointed out my various errors, and set me on the path to q2 righteousness.

Chapter 83 'The Present'

Later yet, I stopped drinking while playing q2, and have gotten better yet <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Actually that was only Sunday I did that, but better late then never, eh?

Seriously tho folks, I did appreciate the help some folk gave me when I started out: Teeth gave me the url of a very helpful modem page (as mentioned above), Nog helped boost my ego when I beat him 13-12 in my trial for HIV <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">, and generally folks have been cool. So keep it up - that's an order.

If anyones interested in my q2 playing biography, I have the first sixteen volumes written - just mail me for a full transcript :0 I also play Tekken3 a fair bit, so it's not all video games you know.

Damn someone here just pointed out that Tekken3 is a video game as well, that's another theory out the window.

DeV - the Q2 people are all set for New Blood, don't worry. <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> But I think Nog is right - the target audience of these articles is, I guess someone who has a decent computer, enjoys FPS games, but has never had the knowledge or inclination to get online.

This sort of person is far more likely to still have Quake2 sitting on his/her HD than Quake. Hell, might have even deleted that to make way for Halflife etc! To someone like this, a game something to be enjoyed for at most a few weeks, after which he/she has beaten it enough times to become bored, or just lost interest and bought something new.

I reckon that Quake and Quake2 should be given equal emphasis in any other dealings with the general public - regardless of number of Q1 players vs the number of Q2 players currently, I think most new players will play Q2.
