Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Jury Service & Medical Conditions

I was wondering if jury service is compulsary in Ireland for those
    with certain medical conditions.

I previously lived in the UK, and was excused from having to attend
for jury service due to medical condition.

Is there similar discretion in Ireland when it comes to jury service
and those with certain medical conditions?

    Any advice is appreciated.

If you feel it will be a particular burden to you, you may be excused, simply write to them when summonsed. There is no need to say in advance. You are selected from teh register of electors all residents (not just citizens) are entitled to vote at some level.

Certain medical conditions will excuse you (mental health, geriatric, Alzheimers, infectious diseases). In addition if you have particular responsibilities (child care, business proprietor, business travel, specialist skill, etc.) you can be excused.

I'm 31 and have only been summonsed once.

I wouldn't worry about it tbh. I was called up about a month ago for various murder cases and lots of ppl asked to be excused because they had holidays booked for example, so I imagine, depending on the judge, it shouldn't be a problem. I would say depending on your medical condition to get two copies of a medical certificate from your GP explaining to him the following reason for the two.
One to post in reply to your summons, and the other to bring with you on the day just incase, (although I doubt they won't) they dont get back to you by post prior to the date your due to turn up. You can pass the medical certificate onto the guy who calls out the names, ( forgive me I can remember what his title is but it will become very obvious to you. The whole process is very straight forward and made very clear at every point. Even if you are picked- before they get you sworn in with the bible just say I wish to be excused for medical reasons, and pass the cert to the balliff who will give it to the judge.
