I was reading the following page on the oasis site, concerning "Private patients in public or voluntary hospitals".

    http://www.oasis.gov.ie/health/hospitals/hospital_charges.html

    It states:-

"If you are in a private bed in a public or voluntary hospital, you must pay for your maintenance at a rate set from time to time. The charges are in addition to the public hospital in-patient charges."

If someone has VHI/Bupa cover does anyone know if the policies usually cover the public hospital in-patient charges *and* the additional maintenance charges as mentioned above?

I think so, subject to the usual norms (annual excess etc.). Also, there have been complaints of the public system partially subventing the private system, you you would end up paying very little if anything.

However, depending on your scheme, you may not be covered in some private hospitals, not for some luxury items (internet access, private phoen, etc.).
