This will probably be a no-brainer to everyone else, but how do you test the speed of a connection to the Internet?

I can click on the little icon on the bar at the bottom of a page and see "Connected at 57,600 bps", but I think this is only how fast my computer's modem is talking to my computer's CPU.

How do I find how fast my modem is talking to the Internet?

oh sweet Jebus, this is bad :(

Your raw speed was 10141.75 bits per second which is the same as:

    Communications
    10.1 kilobits per second

    Storage
    1.2 kilobytes per second

    1MB file download
    13.8 minutes

Comreg should take a look at that before bowing to Eircoms wishes regarding phone lines

eircom DSL comparison (starter 128/512k Ethernet modem):

    Communications 406.7 kbs

    Storage 49.6 kilobytes/sec

    1MB download 20.6 secs

    zz..

In your dialup properties, or modem properties
you should find a tab that contains 'extra settings'
(Maybe someone more familiar with windows could
say exactly where this might be found on recent windows versions.)

If you can locate it and write in w2 there,
your icon should report the actual connection speed.

This may be more relevant than your download speeds.

    Hope that gets you there,
    NiallB

I've added the W2 but it makes no difference. Thing is though, if I dial into a different provider like Eircom or Oceanfree etc it does work and I can see my true connection speed. Me thinks there is something on UTV's side that is preventing W2 from working. It seemed to start doing this around the time they changed all the modems to V92.

Many thanks, logistic. My speed at about 5:30 pm Monday the 7th of July looks like this:

    23.4 kbs communications,

    2.9 kbs storage,

6 minutes to download a 1 MB file.

I'll have to try it again at some time of the night when things are quieter.

Wow. Thx for the link logistic :)

    ADSL (128/512) Wanadoo (France)

    Communications
    471 kilobits per second

    Storage
    57.5 kilobytes per second

    1MB file download
    17.8 seconds

And at 30€ a month uncapped it ain't too bad !

Are the speeds posted here by others average Irish Internet speeds?
