Qualifications don't get you jobs, they will however help you get the interview.

After that it's down to interview technique and whether or not you are 'good'.

I was in the same boat!!

I worked in McD's to put myself through college, but got fed up with the whole college thing after I got my cert.

Got a job as a trainee accountant on £3,650.00 per annum, so I had to work in McD's and deliver curry's to enable me to do any sort of socialising!!

But now, almost 5 years later, I'm still working for the same practice [on better money thank god] and I'm doing my finals in September.

So don't give up, because with perseverance you'll get everything sorted out!!

Even though you believe that the Cert is worthless, it's worth a hell of a lot more walking into apply for a job with a Cert than walking in with nothing!!

This is prob better off in Work.

Anyway keep working at it,i think we all remember the hard ass jobs that pay feck all money, you just have to look at these as a stepping stone to help get you were your going, trust me i washed dishes in a hotel part time for three years, makes you appreciate money when you do qualify and start earning decent moolah :)

Original poster - this (as Sposs says) may be better off in the Work forum. It sounds like you are in one hand having a rant at 'society' and its ways but in the other wondering about what jobs to take.

The only drawback is that you cannot post unregistered on the work forum.

We can move it if you like?

what is it that is really bugging you?

is the fact that you have a meanial job?

is it that your mate who doesnt appear to give a damn has now got a 'cushy' number?

is it the fact that you feel your life should be somehow better than your friends because you got a better leaving cert?

why are you still in a supermarket job after 3 years if you dont like it earning minimum wage? (i can only assume you dont like it, because you dont seem happy)

whats stopping you from doing something else, or do you feel you should get a managers cushy job dropped right in your lap?

you never know, if you keep your wits about you, youd be surprised how people can make their own fortune, and to others it looks like luck.

    so, what is then?

um "blah blah blah blah blah" is what some of this translates as. not meaning that in an offensive way it's just that this is how I translate people giving out to me about being unhappy about my job.
I, like many others, stuidied It largely because of the promise of good jobs, job security etc ha ha ha ha.
I, like many others, got a good degree and then could not get a job.
I have certainly not made the best use of my time since finishing college. I am aware that i need to further develop my skills and my cv to have a good chance of getting the sort of job I want. but the fact is I've sent lots, probably hundreds, of applications and i have only got one job, and that was contract, and they were laying people off at the end of it.
The problem is the feeling of pointlessness. We studied this stuff for years under the impression we'd be highly employable at the end. now we're finished and our degrees are not enough for good jobs and too much for simple jobs.
So intelligent and hardworking people making what they thought were informed choices find themselves in worse jobs than lazy stupid bastards.
how dare we complain. Don;t you know there's no such thing as luck etc etc etc. Do we think we're better than the stupid fat lazy bastard who is now our boss? How dare we!?
    etc

Money in accountancy is poor. I worked in that sector. Having to pay registeration fees and for courses on very low wages is hard.

As you progress things improve - but when you qualify you are often trown out on your ear. They very often take on another batch of Trainees.

I think - if you have qualifications - you can be on the look out for something better. If you have not the qualifications you might find yourself in a cul de sac career wise. This is stereo typing. If if you had a degree and were in a poor job - the degree could be an escape.
