Ok, I'm pushing to get a top-spec PC in a month or two,
and heres the spec i'm edging towards,
just want to know what could be improved without vastly changing the price.

    Case Antec Sonata/MinTower Silent Case 380W 4X5.25

    Motherboard Intel D865PERL mPGA478 i865PE ATX Max 4GB DDR400 AGP8x 800MHz FSB

Processor Intel Pentium IV 2.6GHz 512KB Cache 800MHz

    Memory OCZ 512Mb EL-DDR PC3200 Rev 2 400Mhz CL2 2-2-2 1T

    Optical Drive 1 BenQ Combo/32xWrite 10xReWrite 40xRead +12xDVD-ROM IDE

Hard Disk 1 Western Digital Hard Disk Drive 120Gb 7200rpm

    Graphics Connect3D Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB DDR + DVI + TV

This is just the core machine, I have monitors/keyboards etc.

    Price is 1300e

Whats your opinions, and what should I change to get better performance.
Don't want to splash the cash if something is going to let me down.

instead of getting one hard drive get two smaller ones get like a 30 and use it for installs and Windows and get an 80gig for like back up and stuff.

Also what jadden said you can't go wrong with more ram

i'm using 1gig ram atm and i still feel like i need more! :)

also i have a similar system to yours p4 3ghz 800mhz fsb you might need more power for it cos i bought a 400w psu and it would shut down at certain stages of installation.
then i bought a 420w and it works fine just a suggestion

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

That price seems steep, where are you getting it from?

Also, would not go for the combo drive - get yourself a dvd burner and separate cd player. This will not break the bank anymore

Can he not just partition his drive and it will allow him to get more drives in the future if need be.
Also a good quality 300Watt power supply is better than a bad 500Watt one.You should see the output on the various rails to guage a good power supply.

i don't like the idea of partitioning cos you've only one physical drive and if something goes wrong and he has to format then all he data is gone whereas if he has two physical hard drives that is not case!

Might get some dual channel ram, it's the business..
And 2 60gigs is a good idea, back up back ups :)
