    If you get an ok after testing the driver and the com port the modem is working. Go to the modem properties (find it in the control panel) and take the tick out of wait for dial tone before dialling (removes answering service), lower the max speed to 56700, if you need to dial a number to get an outside line put it in the dial properties.

    You could still have a dead modem ... talking to registers does not prove that the transformers etc. are OK

    Anyway I prefer Hardware modems where you know which com port they are on.

    Into DOS (boot disk or F8 etc.)
    copy con com3
    ATDT 1890 150 150

    And if you hear beeping and warbling then you still can't be sure the modem is 100%...

    And if you need to add a number - add a comma
    eg 9, - gives a slight pause to get the outside line..

    Also look up the blind dialing settings - cos many PABX's use tones to indicate voicemail etc. - as it is a way skipping problems with dialtone.

    Apoligies. A wayward click led to this mistake. Its a useful nugget when combined with my other post on where the modem wouldnt connex...
