Ireland to lag in broadband penetration

The take-up of broadband is set to increase dramatically over the next five years, but Ireland will continue to lag behind the rest of Europe, a report has said.

By 2008 30 percent of homes in Western Europe will have broadband, or 57 percent of all on-line households, Forrester Research has claimed. But, in line with what other reports have said, the broadband penetration rate in Ireland will be amongst the lowest in Western Europe.

According to Forrester, at the bottom of the table in 2008 will be Greece, with 5 percent penetration. But Ireland will be just a few places away, alongside the likes of France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, none of which will have broken past the 25 percent penetration barrier in the next five years. According to Forrester senior analyst Lars Godell, this is "unsurprising, given these countries' lower overall levels of Internet usage."

Did a recent report (from Comreg I think) not say that Ireland has one of the highest percentages of internet usage in Europe ? If this is true then it becomes even more obvious that the reasons for lack of bb penetration are price and availability. Guess who controls both of these

what's new? ireland are the last to get everything.

flat rate options only started in 2003 (not including no limits)
broadband will not grow here because there isn't really competition when eircom own 99% of the lines
