I seen this recently mabey you've seen it already but it's G.B. Shaw's different way to spell fish he says that it can be spelt Ghoti. He says that it you take the 'Gh' from Laugh and the 'O' from Women and the 'Ti' from Nation it will read Fish I was just wondering if you know anymore. And yes i'm just about to Google it but i thought i'd post it cause it's interesting.

Never heard of that before. It's pretty cool.

Well it sounds the same if you take the words apart.

gh from Laugh sounds like an F
O from Women sounds like an I
TI from Nation sounds like SH

So it does sound like Fish

    But it is spelled different.

I've been trying so hard to get a word! It's easy to get the letters but making them into a word is tricky. I'll have a stab at...

    Teausstgk

    Take
    the T from Venture
    the eau from beautiful
    the ss from dessert
    the t from bidet
the silent g from feign and
    the silent k from know...
    and you get....

    Choosy!

on another note - I just made up another word today - Slagmanic. I think my word Teausstgk deserves a SLAGMANIC point for being silly.

It may amuse some to learn that there are two Klingon words for fish. One is bIqDep 'water-creature', and the other is ghotI'.

So do you reckon they got it from Shaw then?
I don't mind them doing this, as long as they don't come here taking our jobs as well.

Okrand (creator of Klingon) is a trained linguist and of course he knew what he was doing when he coined ghotI' for 'fish'.

When you say that this linguist knew what he was doing, do you mean that he was cunningly borrowing Shaw's idea?
Furthermore, can we agree that the majority of the claims for asylum made by these people are indeed fraudulent?

Yes, of course he knew of Shaw's ghoti and imported this word into the language on purpose.

So, not content with speaking a language which owes at least one of its words to the whimsical observations of one of our most famous Anglo-Irish playwrights, they are now making a nuisance of themselves by walking between the traffic begging at stop-lights - is that what you are saying?

I didn't say anything about Klingons and whatever habits you seem to think they have. I noted that Shaw's famous complaint about English spelling had been taken by another linguist and enshrined in his constructed language.
