Transport Committee to travel on Ireland's hidden rail asset - Naughten

Fine Gael transport spokesperson Denis Naughten TD, said today (Tuesday) that he is delighted with Irish Rail's decision to allow the Oireachtas Transport Committee travel through the Phoenix Park tunnel tomorrow at Fine Gael's request.

"The tunnel through the Pheonix Park is one of the most valuable, yet underutilised element of the Irish rail network. It has the potential to ease commuter chaos, and could connect most counties intercity and commuter rails services. In the short term the tunnel could carry a shuttle rail service between Dublin's two main train stations.

"In the long run, the tunnel has the potential to facilitate a metro development in Dublin. A double rail line connecting Dublin's mainline rail terminals already exits and with a little creativity could be turned into a valuable commuter asset within 18 months.

    · Commuter trains Kildare/Sallins, would be able to get directly to the Dart line at Connolly via a halt at Heuston station, Phibsborough station and a stop at Drumcondra station.
    · The development of a new terminus (financed through Private Public Partnership) at Spencer Dock for Maynooth and Sligo routes with city centre connections and an interchange at Phibsborough, would free up other tracks.
    · As an interim measure Arklow and Wexford could terminate at Pearse station, with commuters utilising the DART for northside connections.

"Importantly, the right of way already exists for rail developments so new services and upgrades can be done in a shorter time frame than usual. We should make the best use of our existing network before spending massive amounts on projects that could take up to ten years to complete. However, it requires is political commitment to deliver."
