Here's a simple one for ya: Pantera and crap. Oh I'm sorry, did I upset you?!? Good. They are noise for noises sake. I rate them about as highly as Stinkin Park. And I wouldn't pi*s on them (S.P.) if they were on fire.

Stop going on about them like they are the greatest band in the world ever and listen to other peoples opinions for once. I'll admit it, Dimebag is good, I'm not disputing that. Expand your vocabulary and mind. Try not to give so many short answers. It makes you look stupid. :)
You take things too seriously. Do you think I put that smiley in my last post by accident?

baggio....did you say that rush have sold more albums than zeppelin? surely you are extracting the urine.....................theres no real stats for the whole worlds record sales but in america zeppelin are second only to the beatles. and id say america make up for a fairly large part of the sales........

and as for that comment about deep purple being more popular than zeppelin in the 70's.......c'mon man, look at the facts, look how many more records zeppelin sold, look at how many attendance records they broke throughout the 70's, zeppelin were clearly more popular than deep purple. they are also more talented than deep purple could ever wish!

as 4 individual members they were amazing, i mean page and jones played on half the number one records in the UK around the late 60's, they were the two people that were called in when certain bands couldnt hack it themselves...they were the biggest and best session players (and arrangers in jones's case) around this time......john bonham, arguably the best drummer ever along with peart and moon, just look at this guy play! then theres mr robert plant...one of the most distinctive voices ever in rock music, he was only starting to come into his own as a lyricist around the time of LZ II, and then by LZ IV (or untitled or whatever you wanna call it) he was writing some of the best lyrics ever, just look at stairway (and himself was only 21!)

but this is the fun part.......when you put all these 4 musicians together, the result is explosive, magic, loud and soft (tight but loose), eccentric...i could keep on going but you see what im getting at. john paul jones said it himself when asked about the first time they ever got together..........."it was pretty bloody obvious it was going to work"

I agree with most of what you say Zep WERE very good,,I never said anything else,,I just have no doubts that Rush are better individualy and are more progressive and dynamic musically, they went in directions that other 4,5,6! piece bands could't go...so thats my case,,,Rush are tied 3rd with Kiss for selling more Gold/Platinum individual albums after stones and beatles according to records and have played to more people than Zep, and STILL do...what REALLY makes them specvial tho...is that unlike the others mentioned, they are producing music THESE days thats as good as anything they did 20 years ago...now THATS the sign of pure genius....Oh I agree with you about Purple,,,they were pretty drab eh?!

    ciao amigo...Baggio....

I don't get it. I've met about two people in my whole life that have even heard of Rush. Those record sales figures can't be right.

    Rush are absolute MASTERS.

In all fairness, Rush are indeed class, and calling them musical **** is a little of the mark.

I mean, calling Clapton **** is bad enough, but at least Clapton can write a decent song. Now, Steve Vai I'd call musical ****, as all he does is excersizes in fret-wankery.

Same with Rush, they write some damn cool songs.

Ricardo, you need to get out more.

Can I just say that Pantera are great. If I'm 'narrow minded' for listening to them then so be it.

Naw, I dont think anyone will call you narrowminded for listening to them.

We just like to have fun with pornapster.

Personally, I'd say Brian May could kick Dimebag's ass anyday.
Now THAT MAN could write a ****ing song!
Stick that in yer cereal and munch it, pornapster! :p

i think rush are great aswell....i never said i disliked them, i just think zeppelin are better!

as for the album sale thing, rush have more certifications, they have 22 certifications from the RIAA, but all together theyve sold 22 million albums ( im not sure how many albums they have, but im sure its a lot more than zeppelin!)

so theyve sold 22 million albums....led zeppelin IV sold 23 million albums alone.....as regards album sales zeppelin are only second to the beatles. all together zeppelin have sold more than 100 million records, and bear in mind how many records rush have released compared to zeppelin!

but i suppose the bottom line is different strokes for different folks! everyone has their own opinions as to who the best band ever are! for me its always gonna be the almighty zeppelin!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭Baggio

True for you,,,and good luck if you like Zep...mind you I would still point out,,that Rush have actually sold 40+million albums, and that is FACT,...I'd like a few of those dollars I tell ya...:)
Mind you I do remember back in 79/80, that they got to no3 with Hemispheres in the album charts of GB, not just the rock charts, and they did get to no2 the next year with Permanent Waves, and well I suppose since they werent/aren't a radio/tv band Thats a real accomplishment. still every man/woman to their own...keep on rocking fella's....Baggio

As Baggio mentioned above - they're an exceptional band who have made it without radio/tv (and today, mtv) support, which means they've made it without mass hysteria - hence kids today havent heard of them. They're still a huge and very respected band in any circle!
By today's standards, "99 % of the world's population" measures success by celebrity, popularity and other mtv-based bull**** values...no contest, man.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

Are you saying the're great because they sell so many albums and hence are popular. Or because they're not popular as the MTV media and kids haven't heard of them and are not heard anywhere. Or because you like them and other people don't, and that makes what you like great and what they like not great.

That sounds like utter tosh in fairness.

    AngelWhore- whatever :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    ???

I'm saying exactly what i said.
They've always been a huge band, with or without media support.
Quality spreads by word of mouth.

There is no way you can compare Zeppelin to Pantera. 2 very good artists from different era's. If Zeppelin were still around today they'd probably be making a fortune from die-hard fans that want to hear the classics and not their new stuff. The same will happen to Pantera if they ever decide to record a new album together.

    Each to their own....
There's a lot of music I think is absolute pants.
Doesn't mean someone else won't like it, and think the stuff I like is pants.

    And guess what??

    There's nothing wrong with that...

    Here ya go

I dunno how concrete these figures are as they may be biased given the fact that this is a tribute site.

With regard to Rush being a load of musical ****, personally I can see how someone would think that. I dont.

With regard to the harsh defense of Rush a lot of people are fanatical about them and this I think is a credit to them as a band to envoke such passion from people.

With regard to whose the best, the reality of it is there is no best and there never will be as its all a matter of taste.

Still Its a good auld intelligent debate raging and I'm surprised Pink Floyd have not been dragged into it yet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 79 ✭✭emagdnim

sorry that figure i gave of 22 million could well have been from few years back, still though...not a patch on zeppelin's record sales! even with the many more albums they have! again ill point out that im not rush bashing...i quite like them although geddy's voice took some getting used too (i love it now!)....like i said before its gonna be different for everyone!

as for pink floyd....pffff! stoner garbage! (jus kiddin, i love pink floyd too, theyre up there with zep IMO).

    The thread remains the same.............................

Top all-time, best-selling bands, based on U.S. album sales (in millions):

    1. The Beatles 163.5
    2. Led Zeppelin 103.5
    3. Eagles 83.5
    4. Pink Floyd 68.5
    5. AC/DC 63.0
    6. Aerosmith 59.5
    7. The Rolling Stones 53.5
    8. Van Halen 50.5
    9. Metallica 48.0
    10. Fleetwood Mac 46.0

    http://www.cnn.com/2001/WorldBeat/03/28/wb.eagles/

Zeppelin are well ahead of the likes of Deep Purple and Rush in US sales alone, a list is hardly needed to know this anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 239 ✭✭nellieswellies

I'm a bit surprised to see The Eagles there in third.

People forget that the US in particular are very much still into their rock/country/folk music. Much more so than in Ireland. Its more mainstream than the pop stuff you get here. Whole generations grew up listening to rock bands like those. Its engrained in their culture. Then you have to think about the rest of the world and what bands are going to be more popular world wide.
