    I connected to IBB about 2-3 weeks ago, origionally i enjoyed a nice fast connection, averaging 55k, but recently its gone down the tube. I now am lucky to get above 30k a second, and usually average a mere 12-15k.

    Is this happening to anyone else? Do they do this to people who are concieved to be "heavy downloaders".

    Also, what pings are other users getting... if they could ping their gateway server (found in control panels>network>lan/highspeed internet>tcp/ip). e.g. i use this commandline for my gateway server: ping 195.26.12.225 -n 15

    You are lucky to get 12k I barely get 4 k at the moment.

    Pings are fine, it's the debit that is the problem.

    I wonder if eircom users have the same problems.

    whats the debit? and how can i fix one :-p
    You are lucky to get 12k I barely get 4 k at the moment.

    and they advertise a 512k service, your getting a 56k speed.... you should ring up and complain your heart out. at 8-1 contention if all 8 users are only and leeching hard all at once you should get 8k absolute minimum. your getting half that. My connection is fluxuating between 2 and 10k, probably averaging out at about 7k ish, which is a lot less than what i got at first

    As for my pings i can get from 20 to 2000, literally. most times the average ping to my gateway server is about 230ms. thats the FIRST hop my computer takes on its way to the internet... typically this is 10 ms or less. i have complained a few times about this and they have changed something as far as i can tell, as today my pings were a stable 10-15 average.

    I;m on the tallaght tower, just in case you wanted to know.

    Just did a couple of ping and www.boards.ie

    and the results vary greatly,

    from 30 ms on average to a time out!

    yup i get that too, up to 30% loss (when i set it to ping 50 times)

  • Registered Users Posts: 236 ✭✭gmt

    eircom dsl, ping (50 times)

    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
    Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 131ms, Average = 30ms

    heres my currnet ping statistics, i pinged 50 times twice, pinging the first hop away from my computer....

    Ping statistics for 195.26.12.225:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 47, Lost = 3 (6% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 1218ms, Average = 504ms

    Ping statistics for 195.26.12.225:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 46, Lost = 4 (8% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 1332ms, Average = 585ms

    only 6% and 8% loss this time, very strange. as you can see this is b*lax for gaming and i'm currently getting 6k downstream average. I nearly afraid to send em yet another e-mail. but it looks like i'm going to have too, this is just atrocious and has been like this for 3 days now.

    also, before anyone asks... nothing else was using the internet at the time, i bolocked off everything else with my firewall program.

    What mast are you connected to?

    And Fabre, according to your previous posts, you have IOL BB and not IBB.

    This is from the 3-rock mast:

    When you ring them, don't take a brush aside like 'We'll look into it and get back to you' make sure they keep you on the line and run through the settings then and there. If it's external interference though, they'll have to do site maintanence.

    but there are no user settings... theres nothing i can change. I've sent em several e-mails, and am still awaiting a second response... they gave me instructs to ping he gateway server (which i did) and e-mailed results back to em... i'm still awaiting further news. If i get no reply by tuesday i'll ring them, the e-mail just ain't working.

    i hate the tallaght tower, i'm closer to the three-rock tower, but a big mofo tree is in the way, partially.

  • Registered Users Posts: 696 ✭✭✭Kevok

    Don't e-mail them, it's far easier to ingore e-mails than it is phone calls. I've sent e-mails with acknowledgement requests set on them, had 2 people in IBB read it, but got NO reply, and that was a complaint mail.

    Always ring them. The settings I was talking about are on thier side, you are right in that there are no tweakable settings for you.

    The tallaght tower is new AFAIK, it took time to get the 3-rock mast to where it is now. Ring them and ask them if they're having spectrum issues, and how long they estimate it will take to clear it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

    what do you mean by spectrum issues, id like to know a bit before i start asking... thanks for advice.

    It basically means that they are having interference in their signal that they will have to clear up. You can tell if thats the problem if all the lag and packetloss happens between you and the gateway.

    im with esat bt in waterford and i only get 64kb
    oh no wait, that rocks ;)
    it be ping-o-rific :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭Meadows

    if your on 512k connection speed you have signed yourself up to a minimum of 30 out of 64 kb if it drops below that then something is very wrong so ring up the place and raise hell

    check your filters?
    and make sure your not a dumbass and checking your connection speed using a slow server

    try download something from microsoft.com

    and bear in mind it is possible that the phone company may will say , "sorry but we have just discovered that you are out of range for dsl" and take all your stuff and give you back your money (has happened)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

    its a wireless connection, so either you have a signal or you don't, no if's or but's. I have a siganal so i should be able to get (and did get in my first few days) speeds of 64kb's down. But for the last 4-5 days, its been closer to 6-12kb's a second. sometimes averaging 4k...56k speeds. Is there not a mandontory minimum speed that each user has to get when a company provides them with 512k access? os is that just a rule set by individual providers?

    edit:
    after checking a few places and chatting with a few friends on diff bb's it seems that some companies have a min speed listed, other's don't... but i suppose a min speed is required by higher powers than the isp's before isp's are allowed advertise 512k speeds...

    Further edit:
    could the speeds be caused because my antenne thingy got blown about in the wind, and changed direction slightly?
