free dvd region-free program

my dvd drive is being all nasty and wont let me change it to region 1 anymore (using dvd genie) and its because its got the whole region-lock hardware thing. does anyone know of a free program that i can download to change the hardware settings and unlock it again?

you'll probably need to flash the firmware to remove the hardware lock

Google for "firmware page", it has a huge collection of patched firmwares.
