this may suit your needs, you'd have to check out the shipping and import duty though -

    http://www.internetishop.com/product_detail.asp?item=LTHB1GPROD

Not quite a centrino, but they seems to get good reviews..its fast enuff for colege work and light and decent battery consumption - and its fairly reasonable...centrinos themselves seem like silly money unless you really need the battery life and weight.

They have other laptops even cheaper you'll need to browse around the site though - and bear in mind that there is no software intsalled,.

Still think for college use your probably better off going s/h there is some excellent deals on lappies in the buy and sell....

Then theres only one other thing to say .... keep your eyes on it!

may be santa will come early and bring me one or better still i will win the lotto on sat. and will be able to buy 2 :D

Not sure how correct this is.

Taken from the amazon.co.uk webiste help section:
VAT stands for value added tax, which is charged on goods (including e-Books) sold by Amazon.co.uk within the European Union (EU). In accordance with the laws governing members of the European Union, Amazon.co.uk is obliged to charge VAT on all orders delivered to destinations in member countries of the EU. In general, VAT is charged in accordance with the local legislation in each member state.

The "Our Price" amounts displayed for goods sold by Amazon.co.uk are inclusive of UK VAT. However, your final price may differ depending on the actual VAT rate that applies to your order.

UK rate is 17.5%, but I've paid 21% before on CDs I bought.

Sorry for drifting off topic loike...

Yes, I've always paid 21 percent VAT on any electronic stuff I've ordered from Amazon.co.uk. This is the only UK shop where I've encountered this though.

any idea when this will be?

    Correctly redflagged, TRO.

The position on intra-EU exports is that if more than 40 grand worth of stuff is sold to customers in a particular Eu member State, the company must be registered for VAT in that country and hence must pay the VAt rate of that country.

    In other words...
Amazon UK charge 21% VAT on electrical goods sent to Ireland because they sell more than 40 grand a year to Irish citizens. There's no VAT on books here or in the UK (though there is in Germany)

They do em every 6-12 months, you have to be quick though they usually sell out fairly quick and unsually they only get about 20 in stock in each shop.

Its hit n miss when they arrive but they give you a weeks notice in the paper and posters in the shop.

The ones they stock are usually the bomb though, last spec ones they were doing were 2.4's if i remember right with all the bells n whistles (ge force - cd burner - 40 gig HDD, usb 2 / firewire etc...)

God knows what their newer ones are like :)

What sort of price were they asking for last time? Ball park figure will do!

    Cheers

1499 in lidl dunno about aldi, last ones i saw there was 1 1/2 yrs ago 1.6 p4's for 999 punts (and thats still blooming fastfor a laptop)

  • Registered Users Posts: 61 ✭✭Deu

I was in Aldi in the states 2 weeks ago and they had a p4 2.4 laptop for $1499 plus 8.5 sales tax. It had dvd writer dual format I think. 60 gb. separate Graphics controller with 64mb own memory. 512mb.
I can't remember all the spec. But it was much better than all the compaqs hps and sonys I looked at in best buy and circuit city and the ones dell had online.
It was medion or something I think that is the same make as the ones there were selling here. So hopefully they will sell it here in the near future.

    Yep, still there next week

    http://www.aldifoods.com/Special_Purchase/pr0818_comp.htm

$1500 or $1600 if you are hit for 8.5% sales tax (under €1500 anyway)

It has the low power Pentium 4 M processor running at 2.4Ghz

Cheap Dells use normal Pentium 4 processors so the cheapest Comparable Dell is the 8500 which is about €2,230 when you get it up to the same spec as the machine in Aldi US inluding VAT @ 21% and one year collect warranty.

One thing i was suprised at is that dixons in the UK stock the cheapie medion laptops same brand ALDI do ... dont know if they have an online shop though ???

You might also check out SAVASTORE in the UK - its abit closer to home :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 85 ✭✭dj_deevey

Oh BTW i do know that these ones use standard processors not the P4 M - and standard DDR-ram (so cheap upgrades:D ) personally i'd go for raw power over a warm desk and short battery life...

Win xp home as standard but nothing else

BTW have a look at the "stadium seat" in the bargain section of ALDI usa - looks like it could be useful for long hours at LAN's :D Its a bargain too y'know only 6.99

I bought a Lidl laptop last september (2002). To date I've had no problems with it, except power supply did die and had to be sent back after about 6 months, no problem doing so and didn't cost me anything. Slight irritation was that the laptop AND powersupply had to be sent back even though I knew it was the powersupply. Other weakness was the graphics card which was only a 32mb Savage card. For programming and 2d gaming its been fine. It is possible to play battlefield 1942 on it though with low settings.

The equivalent dell laptop would have cost about €3,000 at the time (I paid €1,700). If they do come back into stock I'll possibly upgrade as I was pretty happy with the value overall.

Apparently Beyond 2000 off grafton street also occasionally do good deals on Acer laptops (but you might need to bargain with them a bit). They matched a price from Elara for a friend of mine (€300 euro price difference) just to get the sale. Goes to show the markup you can get sometimes.

(Tradeonly - You will need to know someone with a company/sole trader to buy from them though)

I could be persuaded to order it for anyone for a bribe of a few blank DVD+-R 's :)

Also Sony Vaio's are reasonable (aprox 1.4K) and great quality (but very hard to get) from most places online - I have a vaio + am very pleased with it.

Hrrm...Back from the Future mainly specialise in unused, older IBM Think Pads but occasionally the do get great deals in on laptops - or at least I thought so -

    Packard Bell (yeah, yeah) Laptop
    Athlon 2000MP
    512 MB RAM
    60 GB HDD
    32 MB Graphaics chipset
    Combo CD-RW and DVD drive
    etc, etc

Was in there a few weeks ago for €1250 (I think). Reason I remember is that I saw the same laptop in Compustore on Stevens Green later that day for €1699. Not that anyone here buys from Compustore - even with an employee discount:P
