    This is the most valuable slab of wireless real estate that will come up for auction for at least the next year. There were expressions of interest in this from the following, I have noted some of the less well known ones for yiz

    ComReg to re-allocate Chorus licence

    ComReg is to begin a licensing process for a certain type of high-speed wireless Internet service that some say will present significant competition for DSL.

    As part of an information notice, the Irish communications regulator said a number of licences to deliver high-speed Internet services in the 3.5GHz band would soon go to auction. The holders of the licences will be able to work as ISPs, delivering high-speed wireless Internet in various locales throughout Ireland.

    It was back in 1999 that the so-called FWALA (fixed-wireless access local area licences) for the 3.5Ghz band were first given out to Chorus and Eircom. By 2001, it was deemed that Chorus has failed to meet its licence obligations and the telecommunications regulator later revoked the licence, beginning a lengthy legal battle that eventually saw Chorus drop its claim earlier this month.

    With that spectrum once again available, as well as part of the spectrum already allocated to Eircom, ComReg is looking to re-allocate the Chorus licence, probably to multiple licensees, in what is expected to be a beauty contest, or an auction who's winners will be determined by what commitments they make with regard to roll out.
