    Theoretical question:

If i have my car insured, and lend it to someone who isnt insured in the car, what would be the worst case scenario if a) stopped by the cops or b) accident

EDIT: also, would there be any way to minimise any trouble?

    To settle an argument :)

    Thanks

Well the worst case would be that you confess to the cops about lending the car - much better to deny any knowledge and he took it without consent "honest guv!".

In an accident the driver would be uninsured so the other driver, if he/she were the innocent party, would have no-one to claim against.

If your freind were crashed into he obviously could'nt claim against the other driver so you'd have to sue your friend for the damages if he did'nt cough up. That could be fun!

Anyway enough idle speculation - any incident which involved the gardai/insurance companies would be very, very, messy...so dont do it!

    Mike.

probably one of the worst things that can happen to anyone is if theyre in a crash and arent insured. You'll get ridden by the insurance company, not to mention the cops and the courts. Yes, you will have legal action taken against you and no, you'll probably never get insured by anyone in this country for the rest of your life*

*or else end up paying a truly horrifying premium for the rest of your life

Proper ****in order! (in fact the punishment is not strict enough IMO)

If he was caught by the cops with no insurance, the worst would be a day in the District Court, and €500 to the Vincent De Paul in lieu of penalty.

But as its not his car, and its not reported stolen.... you may have serious questions to answer the boys in blue.

if you are involved with an accident with an uninsured driver you can claim with the motor insurance bureau. In the above case if your friend had an accident the other party they could goto the mib and they will tell your insurance company to cover the claim but you could say goodbye to any chance of even a remotely reasonable premium

    Thanks guys :)

We were curious if the owner would get all the wrath or if the driver could be sued etc. It also makes you wonder why there are 80,000 uninsured drivers out there when the chances of ending up in deep dodo are so high.

In any case, its a very bad idea!

I'd say that being stopped by the cops isn't really that bad, if the car has a valid insurance policy and the driver was driving safely they would just check window. Of course you would have to pass the cops test which is attitude....you give any grief they give it back ten fold....

Worst case would be an accident....even if not insured there is a company that covers all non-insured drivers....but they pay-out top dollar to victims of crashes.....then they would come after non-insured driver to cover there own expenses....(speaking from experience).

Hope that helps settle it for you.....
