Thanks for that Damo, as I intend to change my plates too. I hate the standard metal plates that's on my car at the moment.

You may also want to check here for the legal requirements for number plates -> http://www.oasis.gov.ie/transport/motoring/vehicle_registration_numbers.html

If your plate doesn't conform, you can be stopped and fined by the Gardaí

That GTGrafix site seems to be offline.

I would assume that a Garda would ask you to remove the offending plates first unless he's not a nice guy!

Would I be right in thinking it would be OK to get fancy plates as long as the plates have white backgrounds and have the obligitory blue IRL thingy?

I still see cars driving around with black plates and grey numbering/lettering without IRL part. That's surely asking for attention from Gardaí!

I agree, some reg plates are just plain stupid. Line 'em up and shoot em down

    All new registrations must comply.

Vehicles registered pre-1987 can retain their old plates. New registrations for classic / vintage cars (30+ years old) can use the silver on grey (they also use the old Z series registrations). Military vehicles use silver on grey in the new (99-D-999999) format.
