Lot's of relevant stuff today. Although they don't seem to have read the Tribune from cover to cover...

According to the Irish Independent, phone operators in Ireland and across Europe will be watching a test case in Germany closely as Deutsche Telecom seeks to have competitors who don't have their own networks barred from offering services. Deutsche Telekom said it will challenge in court a ruling by German regulators that would make it easier for rivals to offer telecoms services. The German telecommunications regulator (RegTP) ordered Deutsche Telekom three weeks ago to allow a competitor to sell phone services that piggyback on Deutsche Telekom's network infrastructure.

The same paper reports that nearly half of all Leaving Cert students will access their exam results on the Internet from noon on Wednesday. Access to the service, which requires the use of an examination number and a unique candidate personal identification number, is provided through www.examinations.ie.

    ...

The Sunday Business Post reports that senior Meteor executives have moved to quash rumours that the company is lining itself up to be bought by Eircom. "There is no 'for sale' sign over Meteor," said Andrew Kelly, the company's director of communications. "There are no negotiations of any kind going on to that end."

    ...

The same paper says that Esat BT has announced the details of new deals that will bring its number of Wi-Fi "hotspots" to 35. The latest round of rollouts, which will cost the company EUR1 million, includes a deal with the Insomnia chain of 12 cafes in Dublin. Other Esat BT Openzone Wi-Fi sites that will be ready for launch in September include the Conrad and Merrion hotels in Dublin, the Imperial hotel in Cork and the Tower hotel in Sligo.

    ...

According to the same paper, Communications Minister Dermot Ahern has said that the broadband Metropolitan Area Networks program is on schedule. The project, 90 percent grant-aided by the government under the National Development Plan 2000-2006, is co-funded by the EU under the European Regional Development Fund. "To date there has been almost 100,000 metres of fibre cable constructed, mostly in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Ballina," said Ahern.

    ...

The same paper says that on-line retailers Tesco.com and Lastminute.com are joining forces to launch a new travel Web site. Lastminute hopes the deal will begin a relationship with Tesco that will spread into other areas of on-line transactions. Customers who log on at Tesco will be able to link to a bespoke Web site designed by Lastminute that will offer them a range of holidays.

    ...

The paper also reports that Internet service providers (ISPs) will need users' permission to scan e-mails for spam under proposed legislation due to be enacted before the end of October. Under current privacy laws, ISPs are open to prosecution if they can be shown to have looked at an e-mail. The new law would allow users to give an ISP permission to scan mail to determine whether or not it is junk mail.

Most places are still only digging trenches. Ballina is (I think) the most advanced of the projects, with much of the fibre actually installed in the ducts.

That's why Muck keeps making reference to holes in the ground. I'm unsure how close to completion the Limerick one is but when it's finished it'll be 44km on its own.
