    Hi,
A couple of us on Boards including myself,Dappergent thought this might be a good idea.

    Board: Weather
Description: Place to discuss weather and climate and all things meteorology. Also a place for people to discuss their experiences with weather, i.e is it too hot/cold, what was the most extreme weather you've experienced etc.
A forum to encourage and support enthusiasts and newbies alike to the subject.

Probable location : somewhere near Science
    Private: no

    Regards
    conor

It gets the icon14.gificon14.gif from me. :)
I was going to suggest it myself, get in there, man and DapperGent :D And I'd leave it called "Weather" rather than Meteorlogy, everyone knows what weather is, may not know the specifics. A jargon buster would be a good addition too.

I am supportive of this suggestion

actually am surprised there isnt a forum like that already given the unpredictability of irish weather

Lets get the winking weather man from waterford to mod it.

i can see this becoming a board with one pst every day with the for cast for the day but it could be a whole lot more.

Hurricane tracking we usually get the tail end of the them one they have destroyed a few timber houses in the states.

    Lots more ideas there too.

I believe this proposed board doesnt have to dicuss weather in Ireland only, like Man said, whats the weather like in the med, or whens the rainy season in the Maldives, how cold is an Aussie winter etc. Lots of points to start a discussion.

And we'd have to get the weatherman from lovely Leitrim too! :D

How about we call the board "Ireland"? ;)

    Put it under Science?

Thanks all so far for the input.
I was thinking along the lines of my original post but yeah, not restricting it strictly to Ireland.

Victor, thats called the Gerry Fleming smilie on a weather board:D

    Extreme storm watching is cool.
I'm planning a trip to Tornado alley at some point.

Theres lots to discuss, as DMC said world wide.

It might be a good Idea OK, perhaps it could be put in with the astromony forum since they are both of a skyward nature and astronomy is fairly dependant on what the weather is doing. Not sure what sort of traffic it would generate but you know what they say about the Irish love to discuss the weather. Since I'm an astronomer it is of interest to me so it gets my two thumbs up.

    Adding my very obvious support.

I think it would be a good forum, there are plenty of people interested in Meteorology and Climatology and personally I think the science section could do with being widened. It would be a good place for people to discuss extreme weather they've experienced, ask questions about forecast generation, how climate effects us etc. etc.

I'd be willing to mod it with Man and should be able to provide some content.

I saw this thread topic and thought WTF! Like its not
discussed enough elsewhere, but then I thought thats what boards is for!

I back the motion :) Is "divil a bit" from Waterford? I did'nt know that...

    Mike.

You have to ask yourself, has there ever been a NEED for this kind of board?
I think the science section could do with being widened
I think it would only dilute it. The Science forum is inactive as it is. I think it would be much better if it were discussed in there, provide it with a bit of necessary traffic :) .

Considering how much you seem to support it I'm surprised there haven't been a spate of Meterology related posts already on the Science forum.

I think the inactivity of the science forum is down to the fact that it is too general. If you look at the Astronomy Space forum it's actually quite a bit more active despite the fact that it has a far narrower scope.

I think when people know there is an exact appropriate space to post thier musing/questions/spam on a particular subject they are more inclined to do so. I never thought to spam up the Games forum on the subject of CM - it just didn't seem appropriate on the other hand I have peppered the CM forum with stuff since it arrived as have many other people.

Meteorology is an important science, myself and Man know quite a bit about it and Irish people love to talk about the weather. I don't see why it shouldn't be given a chance.

I agree with Dappergent, but I feel that if it was lost amongst the sciences, it would loose its general appeal.

I was going to propose this board myself, solely on the reason that on the After Hours board, a couple of threads generated great interest on the weather recently. Yes, we've been having the weather to talk about. And there was a brilliant thread with pics last year with the flooding in Blanchardstown, to pick just two. So there is the willingness to discuss this topic amongst the boards masses.

So heres the nub of the issue. We can have a Meteorology board that just discusses the science of the weather, or we can have a Weather board, where anyone can join in and talk about the weather, and also have the "nerdy stuff". I'm a lay person when it comes to weather, who has a big passing interest in the subject.

So what I would propose is instead of burying it in the sciences, leave it out in the open, and it would sit comfortably beside the Gardening/DIY and Travel/Holidays forums in the After Hours submenu.

I'm not discounting the validity of Meterology as a science, I just don't belive it requires its own board.

Neither Physics, Biology or Chemistry have warranted seperate boards thusfar, and they are three equally diverse areas of Science.
I don't see why it shouldn't be given a chance.
Sure, give it a chance on the Science forum! That way if it's popular it'll warrant its own board in due course.

I think they have/do. I'd love to see specific boards for the three major branches of science.

DMC - I wouldn't mind where it went, I'd see it mainly as a place for people come and chat about the weather rather than an academic thing. But also somewhere where people can get their science questions answered.

But unintentionally you are by virtue of what you are saying.
There are countless amatueur meteorolgists in this country, who have something interesting to say on the subject, that would appeal to the lay person.
I would agree with DMC and Dapper that restricting such topics to Science would be too limiting and give rise to un expandable topics.
By it's very nature if you pardon the pun, the topic of weather is a very general subject in itself.
Peoples experiences of it certainly are, and would be out of place, if topics were seen to be strictly restricted to scientific analysis as would be the case /perception in Science.

When I was thinking about this board, I thought of it as a place for all to visit and be welcome, for the discussion of weather and feel at home and not just to have the place perceived as a "nerdy" retreat.
DMC's suggestion is interesting from that point of view especially given that there is an on going discussion regarding the lay out of the Science/technology boards.
So what I would propose is instead of burying it in the sciences, leave it out in the open, and it would sit comfortably beside the Gardening/DIY and Travel/Holidays forums in the After Hours submenu.
I would think consequently that, that was a good idea.

If I was paranoid, I'd attach an unnecessary importance to a comment like that.
The Board is an idea on a topic that interests a majority of people whether they notice they are interested in it or not.
It has great potential to my mind to be both informative, funny at times and educational without the feel of being a specialist only board.
