The paper also reports that Dublin City Council is to begin exclusive talks with Esat BT this week to finalise a deal for the management and operation of its 170 km telecoms network. Among those in competition with Esat BT were Bord Gais and Axia, which is also bidding to manage the Government's 19 regional networks. It is understood that Esat BT was bidding with the services arm of its parent firm, British Telecom.

According to the same paper, Eircom has completed the payment of EUR512 million to the Valentia consortium following the closure of its EUR1 billion bond last week. A spokeswoman for Eircom confirmed that the payout, which will benefit Valentia shareholders -- most notably Sir Anthony O'Reilly and the Eircom Employee Share Ownership Trust (ESOT) -- had been made the week ending 8 August.
