Has anybody else noticed that the record companies seem to be releasing "bad" versions of songs onto Kazaa in the hope they will become so widely distributed it will become difficult for users to find the real version and so wont bother putting in the effort?
Ive had this twice now on X Gon` Give It To Ya and Where the Hood At,both by DMX. Maybe its just def jam are doing this but it is an annoying practice and if it catches on it will no doubt largely kill filesharing.
Any other tracks that we ought to be wary of recommended?

    noticed it alot yes,

my way around it so far seems to be if you have the auto search box ticked, you'll notice some songs have 142 plus users very high bandwith rating, these seem to be all bad.

so go for one with less users, this won't last for long i'm sure but it's my way for the moment.

yes most definitely the files that have huge bandwidth and a lot of users are more often than not, bad files filled with rubbish....

it only seems to be stuff that is released lately that is widely affected though... oldies etc are usually all good..

This technique is known as "spoonfing", where record labels unleash these bad files containing a looping chorus of the song, a completly different song, a band interview etc. If fact, I think they reward people who host these MP3s.

I tried to download some of the tracks from the new Muse album and all of the tracks contained Matthew Bellamy talking about crap in this plodding slow motion pace.

    nope.
i downloaded "tom petty - won't back down" & "the police - every breath you take"
    both were borked
(tom petty was off the daredevil soundtrack, so i guess that one is understadable)

this is different to that, the songs play for a few seconds & then go all squigglyweep
i've got a few spoomf'd albums before but these completely foxored files seem to be a new anti piracy measure

I had this happen when I downloaded Pin by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Two different versions I d/l'd, one live the other from the album. They were grand for roughly 20 seconds and then went ****eyed. purposely corrupted.

    bastards.

So i just got the album of a friend and ripped it. /me shakes fist at major record label.

yeah, same with the last sigur rós album late last year. never found out who did it, but i remember hearing that record labels had "sub contracted" out the job to companies the jobs of doing that spoofing. in the sigur rós case it was done pretty well, 30seconds repeated over and over again.

i've also gotten a couple of dodgy 320kbps files recently.
the quality is on a par with some of my worst 128k files:confused:
its the full song, only it sounds like poo...
it'd be pretty damn sneaky if they really are fake files

Have yet to come across any of these corrupt files. Knowing my look I will now

I'd put that down to bad rips or idiots re-encoding low bitrate files to make them better.

    (Luck, even)

Got a nice corrupt version of Pearl Jam's Down. Plays only the first twenty seconds, twenty seconds in the middle. That's it.

    Me and my big mouth.

The Solution to all you're problems , well OK a little bit over the top but it usually has much better quality music then Kazaa it's much liter and is far easier interface for downloading music then kazaa kinda like the old napster interface.

WinMx is a far better program than kazaa but I find that it is very difficult to get files from it. It is just very overcrowded.

Kazaa has gone to total hell these last few months, I've totally given up and uninstalled it.

Just using DC++ these days, not good for getting singles, but hell I'll live..

Was an avid winmxer but switched to Klite cause it had more stuff on it, but looks like I'll be switching back.

Winmx was good in the days immediately following the demise of Napster but now it's just one big queue.
Have only come accross one spoofed song file, can't even remember what it was now, just the first 30 seconds of the song repeated for three and a half minutes.
Agree about the multi user mega bandwidth files being fakes too. I have noticed a lot of movies showing up like this lately, SWAT and American Wedding most prevalently. I also have to admit to being a copyright holders dream in this case as I often d/l stuff for a rainy day and never check it until I try to watch it, thereby having shared it for days, weeks or even months before noticing.
Direct connect seems to be the way forward, if only it was searchable.

Audiogalaxy can burn in the fires of hell from where it originally came, stopping only to suck my nob at the gates of hell before being lead away to burn for all eternity.
Sorry for the Sideshow Mel style dramatism but i hate the bastard.
Fuck knows why but few if any of the people on boards have ever believed me about this satanic software which was about as good for my PC as secretly installed porn diallers reporting back to Diego Garcia.
From the second i installed the audiogalaxy satellite i had problems. I only got it a few months before audiogalaxy shut and by that stage alot of the albums were being stopped because of copywright issues. In this case the recording companies were dead right to close these bastards. In the week that i had the satellite installed the browser constantly stalled and everytime I tried to turn off the PC the desktop recovery message would appear.

In short i never downloaded one album and the bloody satellite permanently damaged my PC.
