    Full name: "mobile cellular telephone"
We shortened it to "mobile", the yanks shortened it to "cell-phone".

    Full name: "petroleum gasoline"
We shortened it to "petrol", the yanks shortened it to "gas".

Notice the pattern? Did someone decide many years ago what the rules were for for short name derivation on either side of the pond?

mobile is the preferred nomenclature in these parts
note that his is boards.ie :D

'mericans call them cell phones, that just sounds odd to me, Germans call them Handys, which never fails to amuse me.

    Cellphone
    auto insurance
    rebate

there are many phrases the yanks use that we don't - makes for efficeient spam filters - if you get an email or hit a website with "cellphone" you can be sure it ain't for you

In this part of the world GSM is the technology - in the states it is still a bit of a mess -
    a mobile will be GSM
a cellphone may or may not be...

yanks also tend to use longer names and more convoluted terms for the simpliest things. as if using big (polysyllabilic) words makes you sound clever ,,

    path - sidewalk/pavement
car - automobile / auto (note in scandanivia they use 'bil)
    chips - freedom fries
    manhole - personel access facilitator

lighterwick - a wick for your lighter

    etc.
