I read about this game what, 2 years ago whist in the creation process and it did have the makings of a classic game.

However, a recent review seemed to put a damper on that.

Wondering has anybody got soem first hand info on how the game plays, any good etc...

Amazon hasnt updated since it was brought forward.

The game is dismally boring. I suggest you do something more constructive with your life. Such as buying a bucket of paint, lashing some onto a wall, and watching it dry.

Ive been kinda keeping an eye on the game - premise is nice so lets see when the demo comes out. Hope it works well because games need to expand the horizons a bit.

Of course its missing a fat italian plumber, donkeycrap to collect and special powers like jumping twice as high. Cos then it would be ownage.

If this game 'expands the horizons', then they really didnt need expanding. Somewhere along the line it missed out on the bit tagged 'gameplay' at all, never mind 'fun gameplay'. In all fairness, the concept quite possibly could be done in a reasonably good fashion, but this game is not it. I could use the word tedious a thousand times, and not only would it make a very good description of the game, it would also go some way towards simulating the experience.

You couldnt chuck us the url for the demo could you? Google couldnt find it for me:(

And games do need to be more than donkeycrap collector 17 . I for one am not 12 anymore and I want to see games get a bit more mature and adult ( not hardcore porn mature and adult either ) in their themes - Republic stands out because it deals with corruption and political shenanigans and media whoring that we all see every day. Whatever about consoles, the ever increasing power of PCs is allowing designers to go beyond the tried and tested genres which is a necessity I think to keep the interest of PC gamers whose average age is closer to 25 than 15 Id reckon.

Have you played the game? I agree, it doesn't look like it's gonna be the revolutionary (in gaming terms, not genre) game that it was hoped it'd be, and the totality engine is completely wasted on it, but nearly all reviews it's gotten so far have said that it is still a decent game. I probably won't buy it myself anymore, but I'll certainly 'borrow' it from a friend.

My review copy, to be precise. I've got to spend a bit more time with it before I write up any final conclusions, but at the moment my thinking is broadly along the same lines - this is a deeply, deeply flawed game which fundamentally spends too much time trying to be clever and not half enough time trying to be enjoyable or challenging.

I could see it working really well as a Risk style game played using pen and paper, or even as a Master of Orion style pure political/military sim. However, instead most of the effort seems to have gone into a 3D graphics engine which is utterly superflous to the gameplay, and actually gets in the way most of the time (especially since a lot of the 3D stuff is unskippable and utterly pointless), and as a result both the underlying gameplay (the political / media intrigue stuff) and the actual interface you use to interact with it have been sadly neglected. In particular, the interface is HORRIBLE - performing relatively simple tasks is often incredibly convoluted, and any game which falls back on "refer to the user manual" regularly in its help screens is in trouble already, frankly.

At the end of the day, the least forgivable thing about the whole experience so far is that it's simply not interesting. The political simulation is painfully simple, something which the game tries to cover up with many layers of superflous complexity... But really, this is a massively linear game which offers little new to the strategy genre. It's been done better on board games for decades, frankly. And board games don't have constant unskippable cutscenes or force you to sit around for three minutes waiting for a turn to end just so you can admire the pretty graphics.

I've spent a lot of hours with the game, and right now it still feels like I'm playing the civil unrest bits of Civilisation III, without any of the fun bits...
