Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Amazon for books, much cheaper then here.
    Jungle is O.K.

Simple thing is, check the prices online before buying at home. You can save half the proce on many items (esp CD/DVD/Games etc).

http://www.amazon.co.uk is pretty good for electrical stuff especially digital cameras, audio and video gear, the only thing to look out for is the delivery cost, they have free delivery for UK only. Even still I was looking for a digital camera a while back and on average they were 40-50% cheaper than Argos Ireland even after delivery charges.

Blimey! This thread makes me never want to go near a games shop ever again!

One thing though, just how reliable are these companies? Any troubles with delivery? Do they handle complaints well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

if you're looking for footy jerseys here's a good site:

    http://www.sportshop4you.biz/replica_soccer_jerseys_club.htm

Even with delivery it works out at around €45 a pop which is up to €20 cheaper than buying here or the UK. Haven't bought from them yet but if anyone has let us know what they're like!

as some of you may know, I'm developing a site ripoffireland.org at the moment. I've taken the suggestions from this thread and added them to the site. It's temporary as I'll be having proper sections when the site goes live but for now you can access it at

    http://www.ripoffireland.org/cheapsites.php

If you've any other suggestions e-mail me at webmaster@ripoffireland.org I will add other categories as needed so send me any sites at all that can save us money.

My site will be linking to the RipOffIreland forum here on boards.ie so I'm not trying to steal any thunder. Just want to have one place where we can all vent our anger.

I came across this site a few weeks ago. My brother bought some jerseys from them, perfect quality, took about a week for delivery. worked out around 30 euro for each jersey.

www.pixmania.co.uk for digital cameras, they are almost always cheaper than anywhere else. Ordered at lunchtime and the camera arrived the next day. (Note: from reading about them on the web, there are people who have experienced delivery problems with them, but certainly no problems with me.)

http://www.7dayshop.com for computer accessories, recordable media, batteries, films, inkjet carts etc. I've heard some reports about them being a bit slow to deliver at times, but I've always received my orders within a week of placing them.

You might also consider adding some of the inkjet carts suppilers listed in this thread. Out of these, I've only used Choice Stationery. They are good value for multipacks-only minor gripe is that they do charge postage to Ireland in spite of what their homepage states.

Are you sure Amazon is cheaper for books? I found that once you take into account sterling (not counting delivery) that they work out around the same as Waterstones and Easons (waterstones are associated with amazon to begin with).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,814 ✭✭✭sunbeam

Don't know about books but sometimes Amazon.co.uk can be quite good for electronics, digital cameras etc. They're not always the cheapest though.

{edit} Sorry, should have seen this was already mentioned above!

In my experience, Amazon are almost always cheaper, even taking sterling and delivery into account. Sometimes by an outstanding amount. Generally I'm looking for technical books. The only reason I would buy something here would be if I needed it in a hurry. Irish book prices are marked up very badly, even from the sterling RRP - it's well in excess of the exchange rate.

You can do a comparison from the comfort of your armchair between www.amazon.co.uk and www.eason.ie (don't think Waterstones or Hodges Figgis provide Irish/in-store pricing on the web).

An example - Amazon are looking for £17.46 (€25.34) for the book I have in front of me right now, which I purchased in Waterstones for €38.90.

I would have thought that delivery was pretty good, especially if you are getting more than one book, as additional books are only €0.99 each (sometimes + VAT) over the base €3.99 price. In my experience, they have always beaten Waterstones/Hodges Figgis, even including the delivery.

I've only ordered from the .com site once, when it was a niche book only published in the USA. 99% of books you can get just as easily from the .co.uk site.

To clarify my views on Amazon and the delivery - books I have bought from them have generally been quite expensive technical books (all technical books seem to be pretty expensive), around the €50 price range. Amazon are great for these books and you'll save a packet over Waterstones/Hodges Figgis, even given the postage, especially if you are buying a few. They also have a fantastic selection (obviously) and stock many titles you can't get in Waterstones/Hodges Figgis (e.g. Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties).

However if you are buying one book around the €10-15 price bracket, I concur, Amazon probably isn't the place to go as the delivery charge will be a much greater percentage of the total price.

For a single book there isn't a lot of difference but if your spending over €20 Amazon.co.uk is as good if not better.
