just reading the thread about leitrim getting its first set of traffic lights reminded me how much I hate the things.

sure they improve traffic flow at busy junctions but in most places they're only needed for a fraction of the day. while they improve flow for 20% of the time they needlessly delay you for the other 80% of the time.

In Amsterdam they turn many of the lights off at night and allow normal right-of-way rules to apply - something similar should be tried here (either turn them off, or switch them all to flashing amber).

Agreed! We all know how much better traffic flows when the darned things are off. If ppl could be educated to give way to side-road traffic waiting to turn then the lights could be left on flashing amber most of the day. Something else for Famous Seamus to get cracking on.
