Cracked windscreen

A few months ago, a stone hit my windscreen resulting in a crack about 3/4 inch long directly in my eye line. It's pissin me off because it's a 03 car and was caused by some c*nt doing about 60 mph on loose chippings. Pain in the ar*e. Still I suppose this sort of thing happens an awful lot on the roads.

Anyhow, I've now heard that this sort of windscreen damage may be repairable. Apparently it can be filled with a type of resin which has the same refractive index as glass, resulting in an invisible repair. I'm a bit skeptical about this though. Has anyone here had this done? What was the result like? Can anyone recommend any good windcreen repair specialists in the Dublin/leinster area

I suppose I could claim for a whole new windscreen from my insurance. But I'm reluctant to do this in case it affects my NCB - as I'm a young(ish) male my NCB is very precious to me :) I know insurers say that claiming for a windscreen doesn't affect your NCB, but I don't really want to take a chance on it. BTW I'm with AXA, and have TPFT + windscreen cover on a 03 renault laguna. Anyone have an idea how much a screen would cost for this vehicle? I have no clue - probably expensive though as it's a bonded screen with a very large glass area.

I have a vague notion that the "invisible" repair will only get you through the NCT if its not in the drivers view. I could be wrong though.

Ps phone your insurance company about the screen cover, if its covered its covered! :)

I had 2 windscreens replaced on my AXA insurance in 1 year without any effect on my NCB, ring them to make sure but you should be ok.

While it may not effect your no claims, it will effect your ability to swap insurer, because when they ask whether you've had any claims in ther last X years, you'll have to say yes.

So it's probably cheaper to get it fixed yourself.

Also, cracks have a habit of growing, so even if it's not an immediate problem, the sooner it's looked at the better

I had my windscreen replaced last year(I'm also with AXA) and got quoted by other companies for insurance, I told them that I'd replaced the windscreen and it didn't make a difference.

The resin injections are mainly for small chips, if its a crack (unless it's very small) get the windscreen replaced, it will not affect your NCB.

There's not much point in paying for windscreen cover if you don't use it!

You're allowed three screens a year with AXA. You pay an additional premium for it so it doesn't effect your NCB.

If your really crafty you can get a local dealer to replace your 'broken' windscreen with a sunroof. Highly illegal of course.
I had arranged to do it myself, figuring that I've paid the kunts enough over the years to make it 'ok'.
-I bottled out though, knowing my luck I'd be part of a major sting and wind up on the front page of the star.

afaik a resin injection would not work for you. I think I read somewhere before that It needs to be done quite quickly after the incident for it to be effective

OK thanks lads. Looks like I'll be needing a new screen. Must check my insurance policy to see if I *am* actually covered for windscreen replacement. I know I have TPFT plus an "extra benefits" package which I'm almost certain includes windscreen cover. Hope so anyway :)

Hmmmm not sure what that says about AXA policy holders? An unlucky bunch....or merely careless! :)

Resin injection process works a treat thank you, but only on fractures of a certain size. I think if the fracture rests within the size of an old irish 10pence then it is within the limits.
Btw, my brother reckons that he put a van though the NCT with a fracture right the whole way across the windscreen with only an advisory. but he says more than his prayers that lad......
