Boards.ie Diving Club?

It was going to be suggested anyway* and it would be more of an informal bunch of piss-heads rather than a formal diving club.

The only suggestion I have for it so far is if you book onto a dive trip you have to pay a booking deposit. Otherwise, well you know...

So I'm voting yes and am looking for recipe suggestions for the Boards.ie diving club offical cocktail, The Bacardi Jaguar.

*It already has actually, I've just stolen the idea cos I know how to post polls

Would you join a boards.ie dive club? 8 votes

    Yes I'm interested

The idea has merit if it's kept casual enough. Something along the lines of the current plans to go to SDW for a weekend (if it works out). I'd imagine the general process to be

    1. a member suggests a dive location and time
    2. other members respond
    3. With enough responses, said member collects money for boat
    4. Said member books boat.
    5. EVERYONE turns up or adios deposit.

Don't really know how people feel about the payment part, but there should definitely be a penalty for no-shows.

    Dude,
lets not get too draconian here. Sure if they don't turn up its their business. Most diving op's i've been to are simply ring up and put your name down. The ole honour system.

Phil, indeed a mighty idea (if not a stolen one ;) ). A YAY vote i say.

It you want to call a non-refundable deposit draconian then yeah it's draconian.

AND if I was the one ringing a dive operation saying that I have 10 people turing up so book the boat and then 4 people turn up then it is my business. A deterrent to people just saying yeah I'm up for it and then deciding to back out is needed. At least if they stand to loose some money they'll put some more thought into whether they really can make the trip as opposed to wishful thinking.

I think it would be a better idea if everyone just agreed to head to a certain place and then go about booking the stuff themselves.

Leaving someone to represent everyone could indeed leave that person without a chair when the music stopped....If everyone is responsible for themselves then noone has anyone to blame but themselves when things go wrong.

    Just my €0.02...

Diving with places like SDW people can just ring up and book their own dives but with a dive organised by us, with no dive centers involved, I can see the need for deposits.

Lets see how we get on with dive centers for now. I'm going to re-awaken the SDW thread and try pin a date down.

With regards to the bacardi jaguar I think it should be an open source cocktail so there is room for improvements, patches, add-ons and complete re-builds.

This gets a big thumbs up from me. I also would agree with the non-refundable deposit. I ran a simular type setup for the sports and social in the last place I worked. It was a nightmare. People always sign up to things and then don't turn up. However if they stand to loose cash.....

Running sports and social events in work is where I got the deposit idea from.
